The Roach

Got the new hose in the other day & I just got the ends crimped on a couple hours ago. I'll put it all together tomorrow morning & start the process of bleeding the rack as per Bouchellon's instructions (which I didn't have before).

Replaced the rack on my 95 Dakota beater probably 15 years or so ago and well, filled up the pump, started it, turned the wheel a bit, checked the pump to make sure it was full and didn't have air in it and drove off. And I'm sure the factory has a system to get them right but have heard some stories about crashes when the cars came off the line and went into the 'test' cell. Some of the stories were when the test cell run was complete lol. Btw, that replacement rack is still doing fine but is starting to get some play. What can I say.....China made but it ain't leaking like the original did when the truck was about 12 years old.

Having been a dealer tech & then a Factory rep our field procedure was to fill the reservoir, disable the ignition, crank the engine for about 10 seconds, refill the reservoir, crank again, refill... Fire it up & run the steering lock to lock... final recheck the reservoir... 99.9% that is all it took... Occasionally you'd get a whiner.. For that we would remove the vented fill cap & replace it with a cap that had a hose nipple where the vent normally is... Hook a vacuum hose from the fitting to a vacuum source ( engine vacuum is what I usually would use) let the car idle for 15 minutes occasionally turning the steering lock to lock.... At that point if its still whining it's not trapped air, something else is causing it...

Well, after that, not much difference in the steering. I'll live with it for now and see if it works itself out with mileage. If not, it'll be a winter project.

But if he found a nice rack, he would eat it.

This thread is so inspirational and full of quality that I have stuck it to the top. Thanks for all the cool pictures of the build Mark, and thanks for keeping this exceptional build alive on these pages. All of the builds I have seen of yours are top quality and deserve similar accolades.:lowdown::lowdown::lowdown::lowdown:

Here's a sneak peak of the first drive in public......

Hey Mark, Are you gonna have this thing buttoned up in time to bring to Carlisle next month?
:steering:

I've got it registered for Carlisle. The weather here has been crappy which has kept me from driving it more than I wish and now that summer's here, we are spending more time up at the lake when we have some good weather. Still got a couple bugs to get out, but they won't keep me from driving it . Hopefully getting the a/c charged next week.
