Front Tires Rubbing Advice

Hi guys

I’m going to be buying some Centerlines for my 68 Charger soon so I tried the Centerlines I have on my Mustang on the Charger which are going to be similar size to which I’m buying and the front drivers side rubs on right turns and bumps

It’s rubbing on the brace support thing or whatever it is , pic below , I assume that’s just to strengthen the front fender ?

Any solutions apart from buying a smaller tire ?

The front does sit quite low but i kind of like that look of with the jacked up rear which have 275’s

Looks like on the passenger side someone has already hammered/pushed in that brace or whatever it is because there is much more clearance

The ones in the pics below are 15 x 7 with 235/60/15 , not sure on backspacing but I assume around 3.75”, will measure when I get a chance

Is going a smaller tire my only option or can that brace be manipulated inwards ?

I guess my smaller tire options are

225/60/15
215/60/15

Sometimes alignment can be a critical factor. If the car was blown apart and just reassembled without alignment, I would try to at least get some negative camber and some positive caster into with a home-garage alignment before going to more drastic measures. The front end may have to come up a little too.
 
The 15 x 7 with 235/60/15 should have easy clearance with the right offset. That's where you should look.

Yes, correct. I have 235's on 15x7's on the front of 5 different sets of my wheels that I switch around from car to car.
 
I'm running 245/60/15 on an 8" wheel with 4" offset. They do not rub.

I would not go to a smaller tire. It looks good as is. Wider tire = better traction. Your easiest solution is to put a few rounds into the Torsion bars, which in my opinion, will also make the car feel better when driving it.
 
275-50's fit my 69 charger on an 8" rim with a 4.375" backspace. 4.5BS rim with a 1/8" spacer. Clears everything. Probably didn't need the spacer but during super hard corners (autocross) the flex in the tire would just kiss the sway bar. I'm guessing you dont want to ditch the centerlines but honestly i would and keep the wide tires.

As everybody mentioned, you need more backspace. When Centerline tool made centerlines, you had a choice of two backspaces on the 15x7 and wider rims, plus custom assemblies on special order. (I've got a pair with front half of a 15x7, and the back half of a 15x14.)
The Chinese centerlines available today? I doubt various backspaces are available.

Crank up the t-bars a little. My 15’s were hitting on an a body and I was able to eliminate it like that. I almost cut a pie shape out of the fender, cause mine was hitting in front on the bottom. Glad I didnt

What’s involved in raising the front ? Never done that before

I think if the backspacing on these 80’s Centerlines that are on there is 3.75” the new ones I’m buying the backspacing is 4” so I think 1/4” inwards is all that will be needed to clear that bit where it’s rubbing

Worse case I will just go down to a 225/60/15 as well as I will be buying new tyres anyway so don’t necessarily need 235’s

Not trying to “one up “ you but yeah… you can fit big tires up front if you’re careful with how they are positioned. I have 18 X 9” wheels and 275-40-18s and mine don’t rub either:

Fact. Try to turn the left side and right equal amounts. Keep in mind though that changing the ride height that much will affect the alignment. Some people are real sticklers about this. Me? I figure a ride height change of 3/4” or so should not make much difference in alignment.
 
What is that brace that goes over the front wheels ? Some kind of fender reinforcement ?

The brace supports the fender at the highest point of its arch. If you can weld and fabricate a little, you could make one yourself.
Without the brace, the unsupported area may wobble and bend during spirited driving.
