I’m buying some new AR Outlaw 1 wheels this week hopefully for my 69 Coronet but I’m undecided on the size for the rears

Currently on the car I have

15 x 8

3.75” backspace

295/50/15’s

Please see below pics

Either side there is about 2” clearance between the edge of the tire and wheel arch lip , although the drivers side is a little bit tighter , maybe just 1.5”

So the options I have are

15 x 10

4” backspace

Use Current 295 tires

15 x 10

4” backspace

275/60/15 tires

15 x 8

3.75” backspace

Use Current 295 tires

15 x 8

3.75” backspace

275/60/15’s

Ideally I want to buy the 15 x 10’s but do you think they will will rub with either of those tires on that backspace , I do seem to have quite a bit of room as the car is a little jacked up on the rear I think

Also anyone ever tried the 255/70/15 size ?

70 profile not 60

Many thanks

I don't think a 15x10 with 4" backspace will fit anything. You would be moving your current tire 1 3/4" closer to the fender.
A 15x10 with 5.5" bs would be a better fit. (You know a 15x10 is 11" wide, right?)
Edit: I use a 255/70x15 on the back of my 62, on a 15x8 with not enough backspace. An extra 1/2" bs (4 1/2 instead of my 4") I could have used the 275/70x15s I wanted to use.

15x10 with 4" backspace will never work, unless you jack up the back with air shocks. You will need between 5 - 5.5 inches of backspace with a 10 inch rim.

Thanks for the replies

You don’t even think they would work with the 275/60/15’s then ?

I guess I’m best going for the 15 x 8 instead ?

So makes you wonder what cars American Racing make these 15 x 10 with 4” BS wheels to fit then ?? As B Bodies are quite roomy in the arches

Thanks

Just remember, If you have a sway bar, wider tires will rub in the front lock-to-lock!

15x8 - 4.5" Backspace
15x10 - 5.5" Backspace.

275/60's on a 15x8 with a 4.5" backspace are typical for b bodies, which will allow plenty of clearance and give you a nice look.

Anything larger than a 275 I would recommend using a 15x10 with a 5.5" backspace. (275 on a 15x10 doesnt look horrible, just a little more stretch than i prefer) I'll be running a 15x10 on a 295/55 on my '68 Coronet, as the 295/50 looks best on a charger, in my opinion

ok thanks so you don’t even think a 15 x 8 with 3.75” backspace will work ? With 275/60/15’s

I currently in the pics above have 15 x 8 with 3.75” BS and 295/50/15’s no rubbing

I know the 275’s are narrower but they are taller tire than the 295’s but hopefully that shouldn’t cause any problems ?

Thanks

I think 275s will work on the wheels you have now (in spite of the too little backspace, 4 1/2 usually fits better) if you have room for the extra height. It looks like you have enough room.
I would not even try to put a 10 with 4" bs on anything other than a full size pickup truck (lorry).
I have some vintage 15x8.5 Ansens that I can't put anything more than a 225s on, and they have to be stretched to seat the beads, cause too little backspace , 3 1/2 I think, moves the tire way too close to the fender.

Took some more pics today
So just to clarify my car in the pic below on the rear has
15 x 8

3.75” Backspace

295/50/15 tires

The wheels I want I can either go for exactly the same as what’s on there , eg 15 x 8 with 3.75” BS and use my current tires

Or I’m tempted to go 15 x 10 which has a 4” BS, again using my current tires
I’m a bit confused though , so if you look at my tires they are really bulgy I guess because they are on 15 x 8’s , so if I fit 15 x 10’s I know it will make the tire less bulging but will it push the wheel out towards the arch more ? Or will it look similar to how it is now ? Eg the same distance between the edge of the tire and the arch as it is now ?

Currently there’s about 1.5” bulge on that tire, i seem to have plenty of room still

Ideally I want 15 x 10 but I don’t want to push it too far towards the arch lip

What would you do ? Stick with 15 x 8’s or go with the 15 x 10 ?

Alternatively I can go 275/60/15’s if need be

Please see pics below
Many thanks

Okay, talking strictly the rear here:
The tire you have now, will have a wider section width on a 10" rim than it is now. The 1/4" more backspace of the ten inch rim will move the existing tire closer to the spring, by a 1/4" PLUS whatever the section width increases mounted on a wider wheel. My guess would be about a half inch. Which leaves approximately 2" (probably more) added to the fender side of the car. So, it looks like they will be sticking outside the fender, like the jacked up look of the 1970s.
If that's the look you want, go for it.

Thanks for the reply , yeah that’s the info I was after thanks

I’ll probably go with 15 x 8’s then with either the current tires or switch to 275’s

Shame those wheels don’t come in a better backspace , bit weird they only make them in 3.75” and 4”

thanks

I'm pretty sure that the 71-74 b-bodies still used 44" width spacing of the leaf springs, but a couple inches wider rear end. Meaning you would need more backspace on a 71-74 B to tuck a big tire in, than you would for a 68-70.
....but I could be wrong. Your best bet is to measure your own car and figure out for yourself what will fit.
