Petty v Baker 1973 Daytona 500 - Check out the fender tweaking!!

Wasn’t the lower tier of Winston Cup racing called “Grand National”. V6 engines, and where Buick took the name for their G body.

"Grand National" was the original term for the top tier, then it became "Winston Cup Grand National" in 1971, which became "Winston Cup," then Nextel Cup, Sprint Cup, etc. Then there was Late Model Sportsman, which became the Busch series, now Xfinity.

I agree, it seems to me the early "modified" lower division for The Permatex 250/300 previous day races of the Daytona 500 morphed into Late model Sportsmen. I never understood how exactly a modified class with typical aero downsized Studebakers with alternate brand motors and dual quads, etc always ran slower that the full size "stock" Grand National cars, other than budget.

Nascar "Late Model Sportsman" became: Busch-Nationwide-Xfinity NASCAR Xfinity Series - Wikipedia

There was a Grand Touring class later called Grand American series from 1969 to 1971 that ran Pony cars with similar rules to Trans Am of the same era. Sometimes that series was nicknamed "Baby Grand" and referenced that name in old magazines of same era. Which really confuses things. Grand American - Wikipedia

Bob Tarozzi and Mancini's built this 68 Dart Grand American car at the Hurst facilities in Spring 1968. Just after he finished designing the Hurst Hemi Darts and Barracuda's.

Driven by various drivers, including Bob. At the Atlanta 250 Grand Touring race it was driven by Charlie Glotzbach

The car started as a white Dart 340 GTS and it was given by Chrysler to the team with a Bill of Lading? sheet and picked up by a Mancini father (also worked at Chrysler).

I forgot, there were actually two lower? classes below "Grand National", and both names were used in the race title. Modified was obviously the popular class. And to the best of my knowledge RP never raced in those support races at Daytona. Elsewhere I do not know.
This 1963 Permatex race recap connects a lot of dots. And that qualifying speed was faster than the Grand National cars, my bad.

I feel sorry for those who didn't actually watch these races as they happened back in the day.

I saw Petty win twice at Daytona and once at MIS.

I saw the Wing Cars run!
It blew my mind.
