Recently I hit a deer doing 30 mph on my 03 Harley Ultra Classic. I am fine and have pretty much completely healed up but now I am trying to repair the bike. I am replacing the front fender and 1 lower fairing both of which I sourced from eBay. The lower fairing is very nice and will just require a scuff with 600 (I think) before priming and painting. The fender however had to be stripped completely because it had some light rust under the paint.

I am painting the bike the original color which is Harley 61213/69066 Fire Fighter red. I was able to source the paint from a company called Scratches Happen and bought a pint kit which includes 1 pint 2K primer, 1 pint of waterborne color, 1 pint of 2K clear and 2 cans of activator. They do not list the brand of the paint/products however they do provide good instructions.

The bike has a gold pinstripe on both the fender and lower fairing and I was able to find some tape pinstripe that matches.

My plan is as follows;
1. prime and paint everything normally
2. allow the base to cure for about an hour (instructions say 20-30 minutes minimum)
3. give both pieces 1 medium coat of clear
4. allow the clear to cure for a day or 2 (24 hrs min)
5. apply the tape stripes
6. clear over both pieces (use up remaining clear)

I will say now that while I have painted a number of cars I am not a paint guy. That said I have no intentions on taking this to anyone either so here we are, I am looking for some advice as to my plan of attack here.

you're right over the target.....

I would suggest going over that first coat of clear with a gray scotch pad or even 1000 paper to give it some bite.....

also, I'd make it closer to a normal coat of clear........ the 1000 would also de-nib anything if necessary

Sir I suggest going to YouTube and checking out Paint Society He has many videos that cover just what you are planning to do. He goes step by step and shows results. Yes some of videos are professional in a paint booth but he has many videos working at home in his garage even using spray cans to get some really nice results. Check it out before you start spraying.

Try a test spray out of the clear over the tape to make sure that the stripe will not melt/lift. This happened to me some time ago.

Thanks for all of the responses and information. I will check out the Paint Society and see what I can learn.

Good tip, thanks. I only have a pint of clear and I definitely want to get as much on top of the tape as possible (assuming the tape doesn't melt)

I will check them out, thanks.

Glad your ok and healed brother
Thank you, I was very lucky over all and just got some road rash and a sprained ankle. My wife was with me and luckily she came off the bike on top of me and basically walked away with very minor issues (more shock than anything else). On top of all this the event occurred in front of a couple's house which heard the crash and came running out, they were a huge help.

So for everyone who chimed in and provided some advice I want to thank you. I was able to get the bike components repainted. Its not perfect but its perfect enough.
