Changing my first fuel filter as a rookie. Would like any tips you might have

We all start somewhere Tony. I'd use the metal filter. No chance of it melting on the intake. Make the swap when the engine is cool. Phillips screw driver and a rag to catch a few drips is all you need. Make sure the flow arrow points to carb.
No pressure or special clips to worry about as its not fuel injected.

Not that model plastic filter, you will see its sort of glued to the cap. the outlet end, had a piece of that glue come loose and stopped the needle from closing this spring fuel everywhere, there's another plastic filter that has like the bottom a metal cap on each end. i ended up getting a Edelbrock hockey stick fitting with a serviceable small micron metal filter in it

Thanks all! I went with the metal one (though it seemed much more loose in the hoses because it was smaller in diameter than the one I took out but the hose clamps did the trick).

Appreciate the tip to have a little bucket underneath it so I didn’t spill gasoline all over the valve covers. Now to figure out why the PCV hose wasn’t connected to anything.

A tip. Check your repair the next day. Maybe check tightness tension. Don't hesitate to ask for advice. The only dumb question is the one not asked. Get a FSM, it will give you diagrams of all you need to know.

Do you know where it’s supposed to be hooked up? If not first place to check is at the base of your carburetor usually in the front. Also I would think if it came disconnected your car would have a vacuum leak and be running rough at idle.

I do not. Car idles and sounds great. The only issue I’m having is once it’s warmed up I’m getting some backfire. (Honestly can’t tell if it’s coming back through the carb or coming out the exhaust, which I guess would be after fire).

Thought maybe starting with the fuel filter, adjusting the idle mixture screws and maybe changing the spark plugs might help. I haven’t got my timing gun out yet either. The headers and exhaust system could very well have a leak.

Someone stated in another thread it’s hooked up to the middle of the carb. Figured I could give it a try and see if maybe it does anything. It does sound like it has a large cam in it.

I noticed when hot, after I took the PCV valve and breather other each valve cover that there was a little blow by happening.

Again, the FSM is the source for information. Refer to the PCV ( Positive Crankcase Ventilation ) system to see what it is and what it does.

And paranoia is paralyzing.

Once again, several people step up with useful, friendly advice. Then one ridiculous response intending to intimidate. Makes me wonder why...
You are subconsciously weak minded, and reality frightens you would be my first guess.

Wow. A personal insult. How did you know I was talking about you? Your complete arrogance and stupidity earns you my first ignore. Adios dipshit!

Au contraire Mr Hot Head. There was no insult. You asked a question, and I was quoted. In your eyes if that makes me arrogant by me responding, I submit you have promptly just cemented my first shared observation to your question. I guess reality is intimidating to some.
That is not MY problem. :BangHead:

Your PCV and Breather need to be hooked up and functioning properly. As minor as that may seem, it’s very important to have your car running correctly, and if they are not hooked up correctly and causing vacuum leaks than those leaks could be the source of all your problems. Check those things first before you start throwing money at everything else.

Also, ignore what other posters are posting questioning your abilities, because you asked the question in the first place. They are the outliers and not the normal helpful people on this site. We weren’t born with the knowledge we are sharing with you and learned it just like you are learning now. Some others on here have seem to forgotten that. The majority on here are very happy to help.
