Rust removal, better than evaporust and 10x cheaper..

Thanks! Thats what I was thinking, something food grade so I can pressure wash it off without creating a hazardous waste site.

yeah.. i got the idea cause i will be using Lye to remove paint off some rims that are being stubborn.. was told to use corn starch to thicken it.. just gotta get some heat into it for the starch to work

I found a video describing this very idea- making a "gel" using corn starch- looks like it works pretty well- I am going to give it a try.

Helpful as I'm working on removing rust and paint from old Singer sewing machine cast iron legs to use for a table. I was going to sand blast them but might try this. Thanks

Corn starch works great..i have been using it with lye to strip paint off of some rims. just make sure to mix the cornstarch in cold water before it hits anything hot or it is instant lumps

I tried the gel thickening trick, did not have good results. Brushed heavily on a rusty floor pan, covered with plastic, and after 2 days the heavily rusted areas are still there. It did remove minor surface rust tho.
I believe it needs to be completely submerged in the un-thickened solution for it to work. I have been throwing heavily rusted small parts in a bucket of it and it works great that way.

Was worth a shot..... i made a big tub of it just to throw stuff in

Last week I decided to try this myself. A supplier at work has started sending his product in these barrels and I got one to try this out with. I think it's probably 50 gallons and I've put about a half a gallon of molasses in it with cold water. It's been mid-60s at night and '80s to low 90s here during the day.

should work well, not sure how long it takes, but i don't think you are in a rush :)

P.S. have seen some b-body k-frames pretty cheap near me recently... might switch to one, not sure yet (i have the 61 style in my 62 still...)

Here are the photos after 7 days.

Now these parts did not have much grease on them and just surface rust which is why I chose them. When I reached in and grabbed the parts they had a gel like texture and a slight rubbing knocked off the rust and revealed metal. I'm going to let these soak for another week, then I'll rinse them off and see how they look. But so far this looks great!

That worked great :) If you ever need to do something faster that takes bout 3-4 hours in the mix above, either way though.. the parts are gonna look great

What is your mix? Did you make 50 gallons of citric acid/wash soda formula and then add molasses to it, or is it just molasses?
