Good Day All,

First, I think I read all the threads on tachs first before writing this.

Charger Specialties..."Tach only". Has about 5-7 hours on it of use. Worked fine. Stock 68 440, no electronic ignition, stock coil, stock correct numbered distributor with a pertronix pick up. Worked great. Was accurate. Perfectly at zero on shut down.

The only thing I changed was I switched back to the same model number correct distributor but with points. All good gear by Halifax hops. Car runs perfect.

The tach still worked for about another hour after that...then started to get jumpy. Then just stopped. It does bounce briefly on start up...and occasionally when throttle is applied.

Checked the power, and switched sources...no change.

Put an additional ground wire on the ground plate on the instrument in the event the case was not grounded...no change. Tried various ground points and also ran ground straight to the negative battery post. No change.

Ran a totally separate signal wire from the negative post on the coil...out from the hood, in the door and then under the dash to the signal post. No change. Still an occasional bump from the needle when throttle applied.

Then...removed the tach...took it apart (pretty easy) to see if a broken wire, signal, power or ground, or anything looks loose in there or broken from the board...nothing. Reinstalled...exact same.

Any other recommendations?

Did this tach really die after a few hours of use?

Did the points cause the failure?

If I have to get a new original looking in dash tach or tic toc tach...where should I go?

Thanks

If the dist has a p/up, then it is an electronic dist & will need a module or box to run it.
The tach maybe designed to work with elec ign, not points ign, which has a different output signal.

Only one I am aware of that needs a adapter is MSD.

Does charger specialties make the one classic industries sells? I recently installed one with OEM electric ignition and it's about 20% low reading vs trusted aftermarket tach

Are they even in business anymore? I keep getting redirected to AMS Obsolete.
