Lares 11033 PS gear issues ?

I second the nomination!
Steer and Gear
I have had very good dealings with them
The current steering gear in my charger is the "Modern Feel"
and I am very happy with it

Is that the “firmest” or in the middle ? I hear they have 3 stages available . Thanks for the input !

You should check the coupler as well.
Just hold the coupler and grab the steering shaft with the other hand and see if there is movement within the coupler.
I just checked the coupler “pot”, I feel VERY little play, maybe 5 thou. Barely perceptible . Can hear the shoes in the pot move. Likely needs more grease. I’ll change it out for new when I do the box.

If they are not loose then just clean it and put some wheel bearing grease in there.
The original parts are good quality.
You can get a new seal for the cover but the cover is very tricky to get swaged back on and have it stay.
There is a wire retaining clip you can find to help keep the cover on.
You might want to locate and purchase one of those.

I'm happy with my Steer n' Gear box in my 69. They are usually at Carlisle, where I picked up mine.

Thanks ! Wish I could wait for Carlisle or the Nationals in Columbus, but I need to fix it this winter. Shipping should be $30-40 one way.

I am curious as to what you decided to do? I am also debating between the Lares 11033 box and a re-man from Steer and Gear.

I put in a Borgeson box and related parts from Bergman Autocraft. He is a vendor listed on here. His customer service is excellent. The steering is very similar to a late model. NO play at all. I found out my Moog idler arm from 20 years ago has slop ! Got to change it to a roller bearing from firm feel or Bergman. The Bergman kit is more $, but I feel worth it !!!

Resurrecting an older thread. I don't have any experience with the Lares box. Information about it is somewhat limited. The OE boxes that are made harder to turn have been around for some time. However, worn out cases, slow ratio and poor on center feel make them an option, but not the first option in my opinion. The Borgeson box is faster ratio, lighter and less leak prone, but most noticeable is the on center feel and reaction. This, coupled with a faster gear ratio make it next level compared to OE boxes.

Well, I pulled the trigger…had a 5% off code at Rockauto.com. The Description of the Lares 11033 was NEW !, and “ firm feel” !!! Before I ordered, I called the Lares customer service #, the guy was nice, helpful, confirmed it was new, not rebuilt. Said the “ firm feel” was to give it better road feel. Didn’t/would not say how that was accomplished !
They listed an 11043, which was the same, but “fast ratio”. It was out of stock until late March.
So based on that info, and the fact I really can’t spend $1000 for a Bergman Borgeson unit (including shipping), I got the Lares 11033. $359.59 delivered to me in 4 days by FedEx !

I opened it up and it is similar to my oe roadrunner box, but the inlet and outlet for fluid are in a slightly different spot, and it does not have what I’ll call the “centering valve “ the oe has on top with the pressure and return fittings.
I decided to do this work myself with the help of a buddy, but it will be a challenge because of the hooker headers.
I guess what I’m curious about is has anyone had any good or bad experience with this steering gear, or others from Lares ? Would like to hear others input. Oh, and Firm Feel out west is 2 months out plus transit time and costs, that also swayed me to this Lares product. (Just wish it looked more like my oe gear)
Thanks for reading this mini novel, as always appreciate others experiences.
So, it's been a few years, how is that box working out for you? I'm thinking of going the same update.

I just recently put the 11033 unit in my wagon. So far my experience has been to move the car out of the garage and get it positioned for a tow truck to take it to the alignment shop. I did a full on suspension/steering redo/update and didn't want to kill my tires on a 15 mile drive. I'll have more feedback later today when I go pick it up. My 100' experience so far reminds me of my 04 Cummins 2x dually with r&p, which is a heavy feel. But I'm used to that.

The first time I did my own alignment, it was on the money except for the toe.....so the tech adjusted that to the tune of 1" toe in!!! Yes, ONE full inch of toe in. THAT will mess up tires really quick and glad I only had to go a few miles to get home. And adjusting the toe is pretty much one of the easy items when doing alignments.

Got the car back from the alignment shop and so far, everything feels great. Working on the sway links right now, doing the Moog ones, will have those wrapped up tomorrow. I did front to rear suspension[ new springs, Bilsteins, 1.06 bars, 1.25" sway bar] new steering components[ box from Lares, pump from Lares, tie rods, arms, joints etc], bigger brakes on both ends[ 11x2.5 drums, 11.75" rotors, all new components there] plus SFC's.

Did you change the upper control arms at all?

Yup. Had a pair of FF arms I originally bought for my 65. Have decided to use the SPC arms, from BAC, for the 65 when I get back on it. Also used the 1.06 bars and RCD valved Bilsteins from FF too that I bought for the 65.

So it’s going to have a lot of suspension changes.

I made a mistake and installed OE style UCA's. I should have bought tubular ones for more caster. Dumb:carrot:I am.

Some people, like Greg, have had great success with the offset bushings. So you're not a dummy, but be mindful of whose arms you use.
