Ticking noise - think it's the fuel pump - thoughts?

Absolutely sure it's not an exhaust leak...
I concur. First tighten down all the header or exhaust manifold bolts and collector bolts. I had a similar sound pop up on my car on a long drive and my fellow mopar friends and I thought it was a lifter. As it turned out, 2 header bolts had loosened a few turns. Tightened them back up and the sound was gone! When I got home I installed header bolt lock clips.

Guys, that just might be it, thanks. 68 SS, sorry I posted before I saw your post. I took the hose, as you suggested, and touched it to different areas along the exhaust manifold where it met the head. Sure enough i heard silence on all points but cyl 2; a swooshing noise and the tapping. I was looking to see if I could see any black soot marks but could not. Also, not sure if there's a gasket in there or not. Would you recommend loosening then tightening the bolts? Maybe pull the manifold out a bit to see if there is a gasket or maybe some soot marks?

Thanks again,
Mikey

I might completely off but I got a similar ticking and after chasing and eliminating leaks. I found that there's a flapper valve mounted inside of the passenger side manifold. Maybe?

Nevermind saw u got headers

I'd put some Skynard on the radio and turn it up!

Hi all. Thanks no headers at this point but I’m not sure if it has gaskets or not. I guess I will pull The manifold first to see if there’s any sign of leaking.

Ok so after trying again and, this time, cramming my fat finger down between the manifold and head, where they meet, I got a little soot on my finger. So in thinking about this a bit, I fired up the engine, heard the ticking, then took a rag, folded it kinda thick around a gasket scraper and shoved it down into the same spot (like trying to plug the leak) and the ticking noise decreased substantially.

Looks like it's an exhaust manifold leak on number 2. The front bolt will turn but the rear is super tight. I imagine most are. Any secrets for freeing the bolts? Penetrating oil? Heat up the engine and try it?

Thanks all. And RC - thanks for making me second guess the exhaust leak. Saved me from chasing a ghost lifter noise :)

Well that's good news. Yes a good penetrant, not wd 40. Just work them back and forth a little bit , using a 6 point socket. Knock on wood and say a little prayer.

Cool, thanks. I'll give it a shot. Any water jacket sillyness I should worry about?

Lame. I have bolts in mine (passenger side front, cly. #2) and they look to be stock. Same thing I presume?

Stock are studs. Someone put bolts in. In any event, drain the coolant.

I am following this closely, as my 318 has a ticking sound.
My original chain had a lot of slack at 60,000. The fibre cam gear scared me more. I have all new parts in my 318. Except the pistons and crank. I have the old lifters to do some tests.
One is soft. I suspect a new lifter has the same problem.
Soon I will test the pressure of the lifters in the vice.
Nice pic of the cam chain cover.
