440 6 Pack squealing noise only when completely warmed up

Fran Blacker - yes the squeal speeds up with rpm. You'd swear it was a belt. Fuel pump and pushrod have 500 miles on them.

I spent the last few hours pulling the front of the engine apart. I'm new to big blocks. Never been inside one before.

Timing chain cover is off. Slinger is fine. I see a small wear mark where the cam button was possibly hitting the timing cover. But is that an old mark or is it my current problem? With a ball pean hammer, I hit the mark in an attempt to push the cover away from the cam button.

What do I do now? Should I pull the chain off? What could be squealing behind the cam gear?

Thank you.

stock cams don't have a cam button. Pictures would help.

Is the timing chain loose?

Was the fuel pump pushrod you changed 500 miles ago worn down?

Thank you autoxcuda. I did not know that about the cam button. Let me take some pics.....

Pics.

Timing chain is not loose at all. Old fuel pump push rod was only worn slightly. I only replaced it to be safe back in 2019.

OMG, what a can of worms I've opened. I didn't build this engine. No idea if it has a roller cam in it.

All I wanted to do was find my source of squealing.

No idea where to go from here.

You have a roller cam? That needs a button, don't know the spec cam cover to button. Did you wipe it down before picture looks kind of dry but can't anything wrong. Might want to pull the chain off to see if it any binding links.
Top picture look through there to see lifters you should see if there roller lifters. The cross bar should be visible.

Yes, I wiped it down before taking pics. OK, let me go out there now to see through.....

thank you.

Two possibilities......
1. Do nothing and run the car as if everything is ok.....failure will manifest itself.
2. Sell the car and the new buyer will figure it out.....
Just a little facetious humor......???....

I just went out there and shined a light inside to see the cam. Sure looks like a flat tappet cam to me. I see no rollers and no cross bars. I see 2 lifters sitting directly on the camshaft.

This cam button is driving me crazy. Why would you put one in on flat tappet cam?

Right now it's 6:40pm on the east coast. I'm tired and not thinking correctly. I never even ate lunch. I'm done for the day.

Thank you to those who responded. I learned things I did not know about.

Mike

Yes, that is weird. You could look through the distributor hole too. Maybe the button is the source of noise...

Until I saw that picture I was thinking the oil slinger was on backwards. :)

Shouldn't need a cam button for a flat tappet cam, and i never use a metal button when i've done roller stuff. I did have a cam bolt (single bolt cam) rub once. Drove me crazy figuring it out.

You don't need to remove chain to check it. Mark a spot so you can blip the key to turn engine check it. If you decide to remove it don't turn cam or crank.

Lewtot184 - what kind of sound did your engine make when your "single bolt cam" rubbed?

Maybe someone read this and took it to heart from the 440 Source website:

And... those bolts on your cam looks exactly like the 12 point bolts kit that 440 source also sells ... Coincidence?

Yank that cam button out before it grinds a hole in your timing cover.
