It looks more like a casting flaw to me. Does anything show on the outside? If not, I think you will be safe using that case. Do what makes you comfortable.

May not help but, my 65 Coronet with light blue interior was a medium blue. The cardboard was warped so I replaced the tray with a supposed Chrysler certified reproduction that was anything but OEM.

Transgo used to recommend Powerglide bushings to tighten up clearance to slow down converter drainback as I recall. They were Babbit coated. I have used both materials over the decades with success. It certainly won't hurt to check trans to crankshaft concentricity either.

I have used an extra steel plate on many Torqueflites with success. The clearance has a wide range but, various shift kits sometimes spec a particular range-be aware.

I am not familiar with the design of that piece. Is it functional or merely decorative? If the latter perhaps it could be filled with expanding foam?
