1964 Dodge 440

Reverse light lens and housing gaskets.

Gasket kit came with only the spongy foam outer gasket. It did not come with the hard rubber one it appears, so keep that in mind if you're doing yours.

Drilled 80% of the way into the casting so I can put a "peg" in. A rivet mandrel in this case.

Found the correct length AN3 bolt to substitute the cast post.

One piece at a time we'll clean this car up. Off with the pitted and "faded" chrome trim tail piece on the drivers side.

Three speed nuts on the chrome piece and removed 2 nuts on the stainless so I could lift it high enough to pull the end piece out.

Nice work, Wayne. I took the centre back up lights out of my Polara to put red lenses in with tail light/turn signal. Then I wired in a sequencer to flash turn signals in turn. I had picked up a set of U.S. 440 reverse lights at the Indy Swap Meet one year, and had to cut into the license plate coves to mount them. It all came out fine.

Not sure how long I can own a Black car for... but it's kinda cleaned of it's Winter storage filth. Can't go anywhere anyhow, as the town hasn't spent any of my property tax money on calcium for the road yet. We can't even leave our house windows open some 1000' from the road the dust is that bad!

A tad filthy after wire wheeling that wood beam for the fireplace mantle !

Suregrip clutch unit. Bearings appear to be in good condition so a clean up, new pinion shaft seal and we'll run it.

1967 rear axle housing... approximately 1.5" narrower than the tapered axle OE currently in the car. Should put the tires nicely centered in the wells. Tires currently rubbing the outer lip with a good inch gap on the spring side.

Left axle out of the housing and brake backing plate off. Kinda weird how they stole the pumpkin out of this assembly and then put the axles back in.

I've never had an axle that I couldn't just pull out hauling on the wheel hub. I tried a slide hammer, no go. A 5 lb hand sledge and my long "punch".. no go. Bring on the 10 lb..

Sounds like the replacement diff will work out well. It’s been about 33 years since I did my 64 diff, cannot remember what I took off each side. Lots of wheel tub under there, 13” or so seems to come to mine. But here’s how mine ended up. I ran 15X8’s with 285/70R15’s. They were tall.

She's got 275's under her right now. They just rub the outer well wall on bumps and there's well over an inch from tire to spring on the inside. This axle should put them perfect and I can take the air shocks back off that I threw on as a bandage last Spring. Now I could have just got some deeper offset wheels, but there's no fun in that... and the taper is a peg leg!

I think I ran 3.5” BS. I also had the super stock springs moved in as close to the frame as possible. In fact I had a hole in the side of the frame and fished the nut up through the hole on the bottom of the frame. The spring hangers were my own custom fab job and I had the rear offset shackles. Some pics that i am glad that I hung onto.

I have a 67 diff in my 64 with 15x7 cop rims and 28x1050 Mickeys,, tight.. but no rubs

Thought I had everything I needed for this, that I ordered last year. One noted SNAFU, I ordered a housing seal kit and an axle bearing kit. They BOTH came with inner axle seals. You'd think the bearing kit would come with outers... so I need those.

Attempt #1 to get the pinion nut off. Pipe wrench (clamped to table) on the yolk and J bar with 1 1/8" socket. No go on what's been there for 56 years and originally torqued to 220 ft-lbs.

In the hoist bay so I can check out what "tabs" I need to add to the newer '67 housing for brake lines and parking brake cables. Also gives me the mill and lathe area to work on the axles without hitting a car.
