1966 Coronet 440 field find

I sandblasted the joints and ground them with my die grinder. The welds are secure. So I used fiberglass and finished of with putty. I also touched up all the little dings on the body. They were barely noticeable. Now I just have to finish sanding the trunk lid. I have to do the inside, the drip rail and in the groove on the back :BangHead:

Busy today. I took the door strikers off to sand. Unknown to me someone prior had removed the passenger side and opened up the clips that hold the base plate in place. Needless to say, it dropped into the unreachable depths of the car. I tried a magnet to no avail. So I decided to cut into the panel and retrieve it.
Then I went to work on the trunk lid. As normal my car is no different than any other. It has rust along the back / bottom edge. Shy of replacing the lid, I drilled the spot welds, opened it up, cleaned it up really good and applied POR 15. This is where I had to decide on how far I am going on the car. It isn't a restoration or a show car, so an area like this will have to be acceptable. And to me, it is!

Way to go, looking good! When you put your seam sealer in the drip rails you can use Acetone and a rag to get it really smooth (I saw it on TV and it worked great more me).

This is some good work, its cool to see it and it gives a lot of instruction for us.. well me anyway and thanks to you 747, The suggestion with the Acetone and a rag!!
Im glad i seen all this work in progress guys!! Thank you both...

Thanx guys. It is really exciting getting this close to getting it primed. But everyday presents new little learning curves! Ron, I'm not sure about "instruction"?! I'm just learning here myself. I look at other threads and try to replicate some of the stuff I see. I know it is not high dollar work, but neither is my car!! Once I get this baby done I'm gonna drive the heck out it! I'm really just trying to make a decent looking dependable driver. In any case I'm glad I can entertain some, and I hope in the end it will have shown that if I can do it, anybody can!! Tomorrow I should finish sanding the trunk and drip rail. Then I think I'm ready to attempt priming it.

I think the same, with my work its a no brainier, anything i can do, everyone else can do to, some better and if i can help in some way doing things thats cool, but im just a learner myself watching others and what they do, i think we all may be in the same boat, learning from each other.. and it sure is fun! keep her going, your doing great!!!

Well, the dreaded trunk lid id done! I was not excited about getting into it due to the variety of sections. But after a bit I figured out a good way to get the majority of the cut outs. Then I just had to do the edges with a folded piece. I held my block on an angle and made circular motions. It actually got most of the way into the corners. Saved a ton of time and cuts to the fingers.

Looks good and without any blood, i would have cheated and sand blasted but of course that makes a lot of clean up blowing it out, good deal for you...

Well, today I finally got some primer through my gun. I decided to warm up on the inside of the trunk lid. I'm definitely not a pro! It is a little "orange peely", but not bad. I played with the settings a bit and got it better by the end. Of course I had to get greedy, amateur, and got a run. Oh well. Once it is dry I will flip it over and hopefully I can do the outside a little better. I want to do the door, window and trunk jams at the same time as the outside of the body. That way I don't have to mask as much and there will be no tape lines.

Well I'm still no pro. But there is no runs this time! I had a little more patience and didn't try to get it too thick in one pass. Pretty happy! :headbang:

Wow, man I love seeing this! Keep it up, i sure think it looks good and im not a pro either, but we can still do and make quality work... looking great!!! :)

Why thank ya kindly Ron! I think we can do good work too. It may not be up to show standards, but that really isn't important to a driver!
I decided since my car is going to see a lot of gravel, 2km every trip into town and 2km every trip home, that it would be pointless painting the under side of the rocker panels. So I bought some rubberized undercoat and sprayed them both up to the edge. It is paintable, but that will just be for looks, as it will get chipped!
I also built the framework for the hillbilly paint booth, so over the next couple days I will prime the body of the car.

This is it! The hillbilly paint booth is rigged up. It is wax and grease removed. I'm just going out to mix up the primer, hit it with a tack cloth and spray some black!

Well this has been a long time coming. :hello2: I'm even happier than I thought I would be. Now that it's black I can see my body work. I think it looks pretty darn OK if I do say so myself!! I got some stripes on the roof but the rest is laid down nice. Man it was hot. I turned the heat up to 74 last night so the shop was nice and warm for priming. I worked up quite a sweat!

Nice touch - Molson Canadian beer box masking for the tail lights! Didn't think you guys could get that beer down there!

Nice, I'm really digging the flat black and she sure looks straight too. I spent quite a bit on building a paint booth but had better luck doing it just as you did it, I think the static in the plastic helps with the dust control? Looking good Grill
