So according to all the reference my 1967 318 la motor in my dodge charger should be about 9.2:1

My question is did the first LA 318s actually have decent compression or just whats in the books?

Anyone tore one of these apart?

I would say whats in the books. What do you consider decent?

Well as a kid of the 80s I consider 9:1 and up decent for a production engine.

But the more I read about the compression height of the stock pistons in 67-69 and such it looks like they got kicked in the nuts like the smogger big blocks did later in life.

That being said I also found out that my engine has been rebuilt in 1991 and I am going over the stack of receipts, but Im sure if they went any oversize they didnt use the best pistons.....

I guess my dilemma is I have set the timing curve and fixed the mechanical and vacuum advance and rebuilt the carb and put a set of nice dual exhaust 2.5 inch to flowmasters using factory style dual pipes and the car runs starts and drives so perfectly now I should leave it alone but the thing is the slowest mopar I have ever driven, tho it sounds decent. I feel like it literally runs out of steam at 3800rpm or so but the factory tach doesnt work well with my electronic dist conversion so I dont really know, that being said I have been putting together a 440 for it but I hate to screw with the originality because other than the exhaust and elec mopar box it looks factory correct.

So to 440 or not to 440 that is my dilemma.

My other option that I have ran over a few times is that I can modify the stock air cleaner to disquise a 4 barrel and paint an aftermarket intake the factory color and put a nice magnum 360 in it with eq heads and a nice camshaft and run that because my smallblock 727 tranny is fresh.

Just thinking out loud.

The 318 never was even remotely considered a performance engine. Even though it didnt come with a 440, putting one in can only help in every way. You could always hang onto the 318 incase you ever wanted to go back.

I believe You have other problems. a properly setup 318 will run very well, and above 3800. Keep in mind they were designed to be torquey, as they found their way into some pretty heavy cars, high rpm's and racing is not their cup of tea, unless you change a bunch of stuff. Some Chargers had 3.23 ratios, maybe look at your gearing, if it is a pooch from a dead stop. I had a dog of a 69' 340 Dart one time, and it turned out the transmission was going out, as reverse and drive were trying to engage at the same time. A rebuild solved the problem. The 70' 318 went to an 8.0:1. they were substantially slower than the 67-69.

I was being sarcastic when I said it runs out of steam at 3800 im sure it is more like 4400. I have installed a 3.23 sure grip already.

Ive pretty much made my mind up to put a big block into the car. I have the 440 stripped down and it was a low mileage 17,000 mile motor to begin with and it will take a ring and bearing job I had the heads rebuilt and the guide bosses cut down. I need to set the valve springs up and go from there. I guess I just needed to come to terms with it.

Rebuild it and put a turbo on it and the will be a bad *** engine

Ive had single turbo cars and they are hands down mean cars and can be mild and mean too but I cant get over the sound of them the exhaust housing kills the pulses and it just dont have that sound at idle or part throttle.....tho at full boost there is no sound like a turbo.

I have always wanted a factory 67 440 L code charger. It goes back to my childhood when my pops found one and was going to purchase it and just couldnt come up with the money no matter what he tried.

Every since then I have been fascinated with the 67 factory 440 magnum L code cars. I even found a few that were in my budget (under 15,000) when I found my current car but they were either hacked up or too far gone for me to spend the money on. I found my current car for 13,000 and it is amazing even tho it is just a 318 car. It turns heads everywhere and EVERYTHING on it works now.

That being said i have always wanted a 67 440 charger so if I dont want to start over and cant afford another one Ill just make mine look like one would have

The 660 factory L code 67 440 chargers have got my goat more so than even the hemi cars.

i put together a swap list, have a look and see what I missed. Also the items with a question mark means Im not sure if my existing parts will work? Ive never done this swap. I want it to look like a factory 67 440 L code charger would have under the hood. My car has a/c. I just want it to look like it.
