I've got a 1967 big block w 727. The manual says put a drill bit through the rear bellcrank aligning holes and adjust the down rod. This is with the lever on the transmission fully forward. Then adjust the horizontal rod to the throttle linkage, again with lever on transmission fully forward. However on aftermarket kits and magazine articles, it call for the lever to be pushed rearward slightly until slight resistance/pressure is felt for the adjustments. The lever on mine "always" has resistance. Is there something wrong w mine or are those instructions referencing newer or different year 727's?

The drill bit in the bell crank might be for the 318 engines. (@12 minute mark in this video)

There have been different setups through the years. This video covers several. See if yours isn't like @6:25 mark in this video. If not check back.

The tool isn't really needed if you can judge for yourself that the leaver is in the foward position. Or you can use something different to hold the leaver foward.

The bellcrank needs to be in a fixed position in big blocks as well, using the same technique, in order to establish the proper geometry for the rod at the firewall, after that the slotted end can be adjusted at the carb with the bellcrank pin removed. Confirm that throttle and kickdown reach full travel simultaneously.

I've done exactly that. I was more curious why mine doesn't have a low/no tension area between full forward and midway. It has tension from full forward and pulls itself to full forward without the spring tool.

If that's the case it sounds like the throttle pressure adjustment is off. With the kickdown valve fully bottomed out there should be .625" space between the valve tip and the throttle lever. This is adjusted with the stop screw.

I'm taking it that this is part of the valve body. I recently had this transmission rebuilt. If that's the case, I'll have the shop check it and make the adjustment. Thanks.
