Correct me if I am wrong but from what I understand a 383 HP Magnum was NOT available in a 1968 Charger, only in a RR & Bee

Thats right.

The 383 magnum was not available in the R/T. It was available in the std Charger

Uhhh…
Adding a 4 barrel to a standard 383 didn’t make it a “Magnum”.
The 383 Magnum was rated at 335 HP in 68 and 69. The standard 383 4 barrel was 330.

I brought this up because almost EVERY 68 Charger 383 for sale they say original 383 Magnum LOL

Seems a little strange that a 4 barrel would add 40 HP. Im sure they had to have the same internals, maybe they just didn't use the term "Magnum". There was a discussion on here a while back, 330 vs 335hp.

Read what I posted above. It explains the difference between the 290 HP 2 barrel and the 330hp 4 barrel. Its more than just a Carb. The Magnum 335 hp difference is shown here.

I always thought the heads were different on the Magnum motors. Maybe I'm wrong.

Holley, 440 heads, 440 cam, Windage Tray, HP exhaust=Magnum Correct me if I'm wrong. Oh don't forget the pie tin. Can't forget the pie tin!

Oh sorry. See were discussing the 68 version Magnum/Super Commando.

Definitely not a true magnum without the pie tin for sure.

My brother bought a new Charger in 68 with the 383-4 w 4 speed manual. It had the HP manifolds and was rated at 335 hp. If I remember correctly, it wasn't called a Magnum at the time but I believe the HP manifolds and the purple shaft cam is what upped the HP from 330 to 335. The Bee and Road Runner got the same engine. Don't quote me on that though. It was over 50 years ago.

Read my second from the top post. This is what your brother got. 330 Hp not the 335 Hp.

Well, if that is so then that is what the Super Bee and RR got as well. Like I said, "Don't quote me"

And yet a 68 charger 383 4-bbl and a 68 roadrunner both had the H code in the vin

My 66 383 4 barrel engine had the factor pistons .025 in the hole deck was off .006 compression was 9.5 factory listed it at 10.0 which is bull so I bet the horsepower is off as well . I know this is not 68 numbers but maybe they got right by then but I don’t trust the factory numbers.

H = 383 c.i.d./330hp or 335hp 4-bbl V8 (1968-69)

H = 383 c.i.d./330hp or 335hp 4-bbl V8 (1968-69)
Don’t forget the A body version….

For 68-70, the H, or N for 1970, in the VIN only tells us the car got a 383-4. It doesn’t tell is WHICH 383-4.

Applications change year to year. What happened in 68 is different than what happened in 69 and both are different for 70.
