I removed the heater-a/c box from my 1968 Dodge Charger. (Dirt, sand and a dead mouse fell out when I removed it off of the firewall.) What steps should I take to restore the box? Are there any instructions available on how it comes apart? Thanks!

Glen Ray radiator can restore the heater core.

FSM will give details of heater core/evaporator removal which requires disassembling the box. Take many detailed pictures of the linkages/springs. Very easy to get them installed wrong. Replacement heater cores do not fit right. Glen Ray is not taking new work. Find a local shop to redo heater core.

Getting the heater box out of the car is the paint point. Once it's out, there's not a whole lot to it, once you have the DMT kit. It's the disconnecting heater hoses, linkage and mounting bolts, some drippy mess that's guaranteed to happen. My heater core and blower motor were both good, but now would be the time to replace them if you're unsure, and going to the trouble of restoring the heater box.

For a console car, you need to unscrew the top plate and turn it sideways, insert key and pull your shifter back and out of the way, to make room to pull out the heater box. Make sure your car is on jack stands or wheels chocked. ;)

You guys are miss reading his post. He said AIR CONDITION/HEATER box. That’s a horse of a different color. I had a friend send one off long ago and was charged over $1000. It leaked when it was installed. He has never had it working. I do all my on work so when I bought my 70, I jumped in with both feet. I spend 40 hours restoring and testing it. I had the evaporator core pressure tested and cleaned at the local radiator shop. I bought the new heater core from old air products. It’s made differently from copper coils and aluminum fins. It should last a lifetime. I installed a new water valve ( the H valve from them as well). I bought an NOS temp control valve( the one that is on the firewall from eBay) and the rebuild kit from DMT. It has good instructions. It is very time consuming and expensive to do this but after rebuilding my complete system, it works better than any aftermarket add on AC you could buy.

I rebuilt the next box for a customer and got faster. It took 32 hours! Lol. All I have left on his system is the temp valve on the firewall. My plan is to buy an repop 70 model from eBay, replate a portion of 69 and combine the two for a new valve.

I just bought a 69 Charger project car with a partner. It has ac. If I fix it, he will be compensating me on the labor to rebuild it. It won’t be cheap.

Ok. I posted this and looked back at who posted his new rebuilt heater box! Hello Brad.. I recognize the car in the background and those big feet in the one picture! That must be Jerry’s with his hand on the heater box or your other buddy that lives close by.

I rebuilt mine exactly the same way you did yours. It has been working perfectly for 10 years.

You guessed it Mark. My feet but my 95 year old adopted father from church was my helper and partially in one of those pictures. I feel like I need to rebuild the GTX box but not looking forward to it. I did have old air products rebuild the 69 temperature control valve $115 bucks 12 years ago! They are pretty rare i think. can I get a new heater core from Old Air products? Glen Ray seems to have shut down. I also think I should replace the A/C coil/evaporator.

Honestly, I can but here’s my situation. I’m in the real estate rental business so this is more of a passion. I’m way behind as well. I’ve got a a 69 Charger motor to build and install for customer mentioned. I’ve got the project Charger that my partner and I are trying to finish by spring. I’ve got a Hemi Cuda block going to Ray Barton for main cap installation and after that a complete rebuild and install. I had a call last week for another 66 Hemi build. He’s willing to wait on me because the last 440 his regular shop assembled had problems. So, I’m way behind.

And on top of that, I bill my time at $60 per hour. Which is cheap in the restoration world. But it adds up because I’m very thorough. Do the math on 30 hours @ $60 plus $1000 of parts and you see why I do everything myself. These boxes have lots of parts in them and it all needs to be tested before it goes out the door. That why the one that my buddy has built years ago failed upon installation. It would almost have to be installed in a car to be certain it worked. It is a monumental task. I might be able to put together a water valve for you because I’m already doing one. I’m not certain of the cost because I have bought my nos core yet. DM me if you have any questions.
Mark
