1968 production date info

I am trying to figure out when my car 1968 was built, the fender tag says A16 which from what I can tell means oct. 16. but from what I have read they used numbers 1 thru 9 then used letters.I have read that they started building the new model cars in august. Does this mean my car was an early built car in 1967 or built very late in 1968? Is there any way I can tell actually how many coronets were built before mine? There will be a date stamped on the engine k-member forward facing in the center, 4 digit, 3 for the day followed by the last number for the year so you can check that against your fender tag info. According to Galens books, yours is Oct. 16 of `67, I think they were done building the `68's buy Oct. of `68 anyway.

A16 for your 68 means an official build date of Monday October 16, 1967. This doesn't prove that it actually started or finished that day, could have been on Tuesday or Wednesday due to problems on the assemble line. But overwhelmingly likely to have been completed that Monday. It's reasonable to throw a birthday party for the Coronet every 10-16.

I can offer some more info if it was built in St. Louis. What is the letter code in the VIN? St. Louis is code letter G.

Exact number of Coronets as of any one date is impossible to know. There are no records to document counts by the day for 1968.

The scheduled production date is just that... a scheduled day. There is no way to know exactly what day a car was 'started' or 'completed'. It may have been done that day...it may not...it may have been completed days or weeks later.

Typically, the build year went from August 1st approximatly the second week of June. These dates shift in about '72 and production years went longer.

So the 68 model year would have run from August of 67 to July of 68. The 69 models would have started about 8/1/68.

The latest SPD I've seen for a 68 Lynch Road built car is 717 or July 17, 1968.

Yes, "A" is Lynch Road. Sorry, I just collect info for St. Louis in 68. There's likely somebody out there that tracks Lynch Road cars.
