Thought this would be a fun post. What could I have bought instead? How about the 1970 GTX on the site right now for 34,000.

You’d be amazed how much VWs are. I’m a VW guy myself, and if it was an epilogue edition they’re worth a pretty penny.

I get it. They are fun like a go-cart or mini-bike. Just not $50000 fun.

I'd buy anything else Mopar!

Last local auction i attended (mecum), nice hemi fourspeed 69 roadrunner sold for $70k. A vw 23 window bus was a no-sale at $85k. Wtf? I dont think i would have given $8500 for the bus.

You should come to Mexico and buy a vw beetle ultima edición, last place in the world where vw build the 1st gen bugs, just build 2000 of them, 999 beige, 1000 blue, and only one red for a factory executive, due the exchange rate not so expensive to you guys.

My memories of a VW bus are from the 18 months that my dad owned one. 4 engine rebuilds in those 18 months. No power, no luxury, and ugly as hell.

Now I agree the older ones and especially the 13, 15, 21, and 23 window buses are high dollar now. I bought a 66 13 window bus in the mid 90s running and driving for $2000. You can’t touch a rusted shell for less than 15,000 now

collecter car markets are funky things, always evolving

Agreed, i kinda know the market. But nobody has explained WHY? What kind of person wants to pay $100k for a f#%king volkswagen?!?

People also pay lots of money for MK1 Rabbit GTIs, especially here in germany.
My mom bought one (no GTI) almost new (1 year old) back in the days and i was driving it around a few years.
I personally would not pay much money for one. Not very comfortable, not much power (even as gti), front wheel drive, no ac...
Its great for parking in small spaces because its small and you have a very nice view over the whole car and it does not look too bad. But thats about it on the pro side...

It all trickles down the automotive food chain.

Maserati guy says, "What kind of person wants to pay $ for a Porsche?"
Porsche guy says, "What kind of person wants to pay $ for a Corvette?"
Corvette guy says, "What kind of person wants to pay $ for a Dodge?"
Dodge guy says, "What kind of person wants to pay $ for a Volkswagen?"
Volkswagen guy says, "What kind of person wants to pay $ for a Yugo?"
and on and on.

So many cult cars to choose. Pick your poison:eek:

My best memory of being in a VW bus was way back at the Hash Bash:fool: in Ann Arbor in 1970. With shag carpet inside:D

I have seen lots of money paid for lots of cars that i wouldnt give that kind of money for. Two examples would be the austin healey six sports cars, and the 190sl mercedes. I can kinda understand it, though i am, and always have been, very unimpressed with the merc, heavy slow underpowered sports car. They're sportscars. I just cant understand the vw bus thing. There are tens of thousands of cars i would buy with 50 grand before i would consider a vw van! YUCK!

There are folks that are that nuts to pay outrageous prices like this my friend, the 23 window buses especially "split windows" like the Corvette always bring A LOT of cash

I myself love the Vdubs. I've had a few in my younger days. I loved to make dune buggies out of them. Awesome off-road rides.
