318/340 Head Rebuilding - Freeze Plugs???

In rebuilding SBM heads, is it necessary or recommended that the "freeze plugs" located on the heads be removed/replaced when rebuilding the heads?

Is this something commonly done as I don't believe I've heard of being done

Are these "freeze plugs" a common size?

Yes you need to change them... Yes it is commonly done... Yes they are a common size... 1 1/4"
