how hard is it to replace the rear main on a 74 318? my spare motor leaks a bit and might as well change it before she goes into my next project, Thanks.

Oil pan, rear main cap. Just make sure to get the seal lip facing towards the front of the motor.

FelPro part numbers:
Oil pan Gasket OS30448C
Rear Main Seal BS40245

IF the original is a rope type seal they can be a bugger to remove from the block without crank removal. 69Bee got ya started.Sounds like it's out of the car and on a stand. You may have to remove all the main caps and lift the crank some to remove the old seal from the block.

The motors out of the car? That's a walk in the park. pull the pan, pull the last main cap, change the seal, reassemble in reverse order. Don't forget to tighten the main cap properly. use a new pan gasket if needed. Crack a cold beverage. Done
