Hello everyone. I'm trying to help my hubby out. He has bought a 66 Coronet. The original motor is a 318 wedge but he is putting a 383 in it. How do you know if it is a commando? I have checked the engine code and all of the sites just state it was a B. How do I identify what type of 383 he has?

I'm pretty sure even the 383 Commando in 66 would have the HP stamp on the pad by the distributor. You should see 383 clearly marked with an HP stamp somewhere below.

dat welcome to FBBO from NorCal

The term Commando was just what Plymouth called their engines. There was a 273 Commando, 361 Commando, 383 Commando and 440 Commando. The term does not signify a variant in the motor like some terms (Road Runner and Magnum come to mind) used in '68 and later.

All '66 Plymouth two and four bbl 383's were called Commandos. In 66, there was no 383-2bbl for the B bodies so all 383 Belvedere based cars were 383-4bbls.
