That explains a great deal, but when the is guy standing near the car, what tells him which engine goes in the car. 330 , or 335?. I'm really looking for the book that translates from the three digit build sheet number, be it 925, 704(383 dart, or 707, 383 2bbl) these are 68' numbers) to the data tag. Curious I am! LoL

Frankly it gets kind of cumbersome. that's why it's just easier for publications and websites to continue to print wrong information instead of doing the research.

I'll be the first to admit I don't know the 70 numbers and applications as well.
1970 gets real involved when you have to consider B, C and E bodies, transmissions and A/C applications.
I try to stick with just the B bodies all three years.

There are some rules of thumb:

'68 and 69 A/C automatically = 330 horse assembly. There is a 335 horse A/C assembly in 70.
'68 335 horse was Super Bee and Road Runner only.
'69 335 horse orange automatic is for SB/RR only. Four speed non A/C cars = orange 335 horse in any B body.
'69 330 horse automatic = any B body except SB/RR.

No 68 Chargers with HP.
No 69 automatic Chargers with HP.

68 engines are turquoise
69 and 70's HP's are orange.

Not sure what's happening either.
The top pictures looks like D383 and some other stamps.
The bottom picture looks like a cast crank '77 440. (7T440 E)

two different engines, can't help without more Information.

i'd like to see that 69 convertible, that is quite a car. You can't lose on the charger. This numbers stuff is just a little to the extreme anymore. If mine match, fine. If they don't, i'm fine too. If your block is 7/22/68, that is likely a 69' anyway. Look at the pad date by the distributer. Lol

im with you on this one monaco! Just love have a cool mopar sighting every once in awhile !!

I posted the pictures cause the guy that started this post asked me if i knew how to tell what engine i had and year but he didn't wait for me to explain he got mad and hung up the phone before i could tell him what he had asked me which was the year of the block & so on he said that it was not stamped on the pad and i just wanted to show where it was and give him more info on how to check.

I know where its at, but you wanted to do all the talking and none of the listening. If your selling then maybe you should listen to what I was asking!!! When I asked if you knew how to tell you said the 383 and 440 were in the same spot. There not. I'm sure you found that out when you went to your garage to take those pics. Not even sure why you even brought up the 440.
I asked if you new cause most people I talk to on CraigsList think its the casting #

I have a 69 Charger 383HP automatic with A/C. Did I read correctly about someone saying the 69 Charger 383HP automatic didn't come with A/C?

Not to worry, The 68-69 Charger came with a 330HP engine, no HP stamp. Great engine, they really ran the same as the 335HP Superbee/ Roadrunner option. They were available with factory A/C. I found a 69' Roadrunner once with A/C, with the 383 engine, no HP stamp. It was the 330HP in that car. 68-69 chargers and Sport Satellites with the H code in the Vin had the 330HP engine.

No...the 69 Charger with Automatic did not come with the 335 HP engine.
No 69 with A/C came with the 335 horse HP.

From above:

The only truely different 383 block's are the common BB block and the rare RB. I pay more attention to the more important stampings of over and under size components. Things that will actually make a difference on parts that need to be replaced or machined. Mopar has always done oddball things that will reflect on the build sheet and vehicle tags. Experimentations made there way into the public's hands. We're these all documented I doubt it.
