Kind of a dumb question, but here goes. I'm currently building a '69 383 and was wondering if 440 pistons would work in this engine. The block would be bored .060" and of lately I can't find 383 slugs that have valve reliefs in the domes. This motor is gonna be a hi winding big block. Is the pin height in the same spot as the 383? I have more info if you need it.

440 pistons will NOT fit in a 383 (way too big). I seem to recall something about 426 pistons sharing the same/similar bore as the 383 or something like that. 383 pistons with domes & valve reliefs are a pretty common.

The max + bore for a 383 is
.040 per service manual.

Appreciate the input. I don't know where my brain has been the last couple of days,,,, maybe left it in my other hat!! Anyways, those pistons from Mancini are exactly what I'm looking for. Awesome price too. Now I can get this project rolling. Shooting for 438 cubes from my 383. That should make my '73 Charger get up and go! Thanks again.

A .070 over 383 will take a standard bore 440 piston but the compression height won't be right for the rod length. Even a low compression 440 piston will need the top machined down to get zero deck. Btw, I have found a couple of 383's that had thick enough walls to be bored that much but the only way to find out how much any block can be bore is to sonic test it.

FYI ... you need to be really careful on those hypereutectic pistons to get the ring end gap set correctly.
I know a lot of people that have good results with them but yes, if you don't get it right, you will have problems.

440 crank in a 383 can give you 426. COOL

A 408 or a 438? Though the KB pistons work well when the rings are properly gaped, these are incorrect for a 438. A 438 would be a .060" over 383 with a 440 crank. If you are planning on running a 440 crank to stroke your 383 you will need a piston with the pin located .185" higher than stock. Also beware that the counter weights need to clear the bottom of the piston skit and the inside e of the block. In many cases block grinding may be required. It is possible with the correct parts. check here
