440 to 512 build

Well this deal was built for the '94 racing season and had a Purple shaft cam.. there are lots better out there today. Mike Jones is grinding mine ...the specs on his cams seem pretty mild but the secret is in the ramps and the timing not the 'big' numbers. My kid's B-mod sure opened some eyes during his first time on the track with one of Mike's cams.

I put together a 451 B engine with TF240 heads and I had Tim @ Hughes help me pick out a cam and was very pleased. I also had one ground by Bullet and that did pretty good also. Had a few Hyd roller cams and they got into the 570 HP range and then Tim suggested a solid flat tappet for valve control. Let me tell you it picked up about 30 hp and a whole heap of torque. Tried a few tests on different engines 440,451,470,512 and hyd roller and solid flats. Every time we used a solid flat it just plain and simple did better that the hydr roller. Yeah have to adjust them once a year but it sounds great and the car pulls like a SOB. Lot less $$$$ also. And that's from a 451 with 10.75 compView attachment 634429
I got a chance to get to the track and try the car out and I am happy with the results. I still have some tuning to do but i'm on the right path. Car ran a 11:71 @ 116.75 and responded very well at the lights. I thinks it's ok for a 4100lbs car.

Very nice. What was the DA at Napierville today? Like -400 ft?

DA?? if it's altitude it's 100
Density altitude. It's air density relative to standard atmospheric conditions and is represented as altitude relative to mean sea level. If the track is at 100 ft, and the air temp was 45° F, the the DA was likely a negative number.

The build is going slow. I am on no hurry. So far I have disassembled the Melling high volume oil pump, cleaned it out, and there was some dirt in it, test fit and mounted it on the engine.

Fit the new 7qt Milodon oil pan, Mopar windage tray with Milodon pickup to the engine. Had to clearance the windage tray slightly to clear the pick up tube. Not sealed and final assembled yet, just mounted.

The Summit Racing branded double roller timing set is here. Still need to order the cam From Dwayne. Sand blast and paint the timing cover, then once the cam is in and degreed, I can mount the timing cover and seal up the bottom end.

I have a bunch of stuff in my cart at Summit. Waiting for cyber Monday.

They have carbs on sale right now too. I have my eye on this one.

Did you get the "low profile" 7 quart and if so, do you have the part# handy?

I sure hope that I didn't jump too soon on my $1,700 some odd dollars I just spent on the QA1 front suspension with Summit. Mancini was the closest on price, Summit being a dollar or 2 cheaper on a couple of parts, not significant $s, but Summit matched the price from another website on the SPC UCAs, and that saved me about $60 on the pair vs Mancini (who offers SPC). Free shipping is a significant savings, and frankly, customer service is WAY better in my experience than Mancini, and Summit has a generous returns policy. I guess I'll have to check pricing on everything I bought vs Monday's prices.
@Paul_G I'm going to go back and read this whole thread, because I want to have a 6XX HP and torque motor built, soon I hope.

Bio, I bought the 7qt Milodon oil pan with side kick outs,
oil pan #30930, https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mil-30930
pickup #18325, https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mil-18325
They came in an oil pan power package from Mancini all together in a kit with some other parts.

I think the best deal Summit is going to offer is that $11 off $100, $26 off $250, $51 off $500 deal with free shipping. I already placed one $500 order this weekend, placing another tonight, and one more tomorrow. I wish it was a straight 10% off deal, but it stops at $500. I hope they dont cut me off, lol.

Trick flow has built a stock stroke 440 making close to the numbers your looking for, 576TQ/ 620HP. The cam they used is a little aggressive for my needs. I want more vacuum for power brakes and to cruise at lower RPM than the cam they used would be happy with. Your needs may be different than mine. I still expect my build to be over 600#TQ and over 550 HP, and act like a mild built engine

That cam would be good cut @ 112 LSA would be good vaccum

No power brakes, and although I am about to do a full Wilwood 4 wheel disc brake system, I have ZERO interest in going to power brakes. I really prefer the feel of manual brakes.
I will consider changing over to power steering though, probably when I do the serpentine belt and pulley system, and eventually air conditioning too.
Anywhere close to 600 HP is fine by me, but I sure would like a high, "flat" long torque line, and I really would like the peak numbers to be in the 650 ft lb range.
My hope is that this can all come in without ringing the neck of my motor, BUT it has to turn enough RPMs safely for me to cross the 1320 w/out shifting into 5th gear with my 4.10 ring and pinion gears.

Did you use the trick flow recommended cam? If so how does it idle? Does it make much vacuum?

I did use the trick flow recommended cam. It idles just fine around 1000 RPM. Doesn't make a whole lot of vacuum. But I'm super happy with the set up. I use mine for car show cruises and haven't even hit the track with it. I don't have power brakes or anything needing vacuum.

Head gasket question. The cylinders are .030" over bore using the 440 Source pistons.

I have a machinists rule, measured the piston bore to the outside edge of the chamfer to be 4 26/64" by my eye. The FelPro gasket # SFL1009, specced at 4.410" bore, measures out to be the same 4 26/64" by my eye on the machinists rule. Is this the right gasket to use? The 4.410 gasket is right on the outside edge of the chamfer. The fire ring should be what, .030 away from the edge of the bore, or the chamfer?

I have read that the fire ring type gasket is not the best choice with an aluminum head. Would I be better off sending it back anyway and getting cometic multi layer steel gaskets?
