#6 plug on a 440

Buy a sacrificial box wrench and torch it to fit. I have a collection of "special" wrenches.

I am surprised no one told him about drilling a 2'' hole in the inner fender , in line with no. 6 plug !
I also did it to the other side too , but the engine bay in a 68 barracuda is smaller than the b bodies ...

Try and find a magnetic spark plug socket with a hex on the end. I have a pair of them (for 5/8" & 13/16" hex spark plugs).

In '68-'70 as soon as I got to the drag strip I would pull the plugs and install brand new plugs then I pulled the plugs after every run and I used a magnetic socket and a box wrench every time on #6. Never had any issues getting the plugs out on the hot engine.

The passenger side… 2-4-6-8 are a pain in the *** on my stock 383 ‘68 Satellite. But yeah. The spark plug socket and a 12 point box end help.

Which company makes an Iridium 3/8" reach plug that is equivalent to the NGK BP6S or Champion J14Y. Part #?

Most companies use a copper centre electrode, which is encased in a nickel/steel jacket. The copper is not exposed directly to heat.

I use a 5/8 socket w/ 5/8 12 point box wrench for #2, #4, or any other tight spots and a open end on it when it gets too tight. With 2&1/4 tubes I do some from underneath.

In the late 90's running a 440 with headers of not sure what brand, I was burning the boots on #6 even with the shorter Accel's. Not recommending anyone do this, but I ended up using a lawnmower plug cause it was even shorter,....and on a 300 :elmer:of nos

$86 !!!

I have Doug's big tubes on my 440 and use like already stated. Open or closed end wrench on a plug socket, closed end on the plug. Rubber hose to install. #6 can be easier underneath but I manage to do it above. Hardest part I find is getting the plug wires off and back on. These old fingers don't have the strength and flexibility that they used to.
I would buy those just to make the job easier.
For the 440 Stealth heads, I bought the Snap-On version (about all I could find 25-30 years ago) and I think just the one socket was around $40 way back then. I bought 3 of them. One for the garage, one for the car trailer tool box, and one to give to a friend.
The Snap-On one looks just like the SLP one listed here for about $50: https://www.amazon.com/SLP-30102-Spark-Plug-Socket/dp/B00CE2L7ZE
Found a link to the Snap-On, $47.25. These are for the aftermarket 5/8" hex spark plugs, but the hex sits into the aluminum heads so you can't get to it with a wrench.

What do you mean by reach?

What I did drill hole straight in. 1, 2, 3, 4 under from front, rest either on top or under (most can be done under)
I’ll add, I used J7 Champion on my max. Very short lawnmower plug

I have used some Autolite AP85 Platinum in my Coronet.

9mm/.354 reach

Mechanic,
Thanks for that. Was not aware of any Plat/Irid short reach plugs being available.

Thanks for all your suggestions…they all worked
Special sockets, special tools, replaced 2 from underneath, crows feet….
Just persistence…1/4 turn at a time
