68 RT Charger In NC - OPINIONS NEEDED

If its not meant to be.... Well, you know the rest. Very good advise here and agree with most of what is being offered. The 25k "drivers" all seem to need 10k in work and the 40k non matching cars seem way overpriced until you try to build one like Kern Dog said. Agree that patience is key but also do your diligence. Every car you look at you'll learn more and get better at finding issues and realizing values.
Im in CT and if you ever want to check out my car or my buddy's (he just bought a 69RR after looking at a lot of turds) you are more than welcome to come by for a cold one. I also know some good mopar guys that can look at a potential purchase car if its somewhat local (wish i knew them when i was shopping)

Your target unfortunately seems to be the hottest valued car now so it makes it that much more difficult.

good luck!

Thanks! I'm in the New Haven area. Do you go to any shows around here? Would be nice to stop by & say hey to a fellow FBBO member.

All i know is i wanted a convertible that i could drive and enjoy. I wanted a reliable car that the odds of breaking down are reduced. The only way i know how to do that is to go over ever inch of that car's mechanics and replace or rebuild every single component. I found a car with a solid subframe that needed quarter panel work, trunk extension piece and trunk floors of course needed that and paint. I bought the car for 3 grand and im sure by the time im done it will be close to 40 grand. Id be doing good if i could get high twenty's if i sold it when completed. So what, its a hobby, a pastime, a diversion from the day in day out bullshit and stress and thats worth a few bucks right there. What i have will be a very nice driver car convertible with air that looks great and will be a accomplishment for me. Maybe this route i took may be wrong but i didnt have 15,20,25,30 grand to spend on a car so right or wrong this worked for me. Id rather buy a car needed a total restoration than a car for 25 plus that was done half assed and needed another 15 or more to make it right. Best of luck and i hope you find what your looking for

New member shovelheadted is looking to sell a 68 and a 69 Chargers BB's. In Welcome Wagon thread title is "new here hi mopar nuts". Hasn't placed an ad.

Kern Dog - Thanks for your input & I agree that people bitch about a car when you look for opinions but when you say hey look what I just bought it's all thumbs up. I also agree that the tach needs to go along with the air cleaner. Not all that expensive to replace & 99% of the time your driving with the hood down anyhow so big deal.

I'm just looking for something nice to drive around on a nice day and perhaps a local car show.
I said pretty much the same thing as Kern did awhile back and got a member jumping all over my **** for saying it. I agree with him too. It was a general comment about all cars that come up for sale - but happened to be in a thread about another Charger. Whatever....

Im in the Hartford area. I do go to a couple shows but typically dont spend all day at them if you know what i mean. Id rather be out driving and tinkering with the car! Think today im going to be doing that exact thing too, supposed to be nice!

Ill let you know if we go to any shows. The middletown main street show is good but not until June i think. You also may want to follow Mopars in Motion and hit their shows. Often some mopars for sale at them by enthusiasts.

Thanks I went to the MIM last year and was a blast to see the cars I was looking for. Hardly any shows have any Mopars, a you probably know.

Here is a perspective that is similar to Kern Dog. Are you going to travel to see a car, or wait until one comes up in your area? If you have defined the car you want, the price you can pay, and the reason you want to own it. The purchase goes much easier. You can be chasing cars for 3 years, missing good deals by a day and when you finally get that car pay more then the one you missed 3 years ago. What is the 3 years driving a Camry on weekends vice a Charger worth to you. IF you sell the car you bought 3 years later and lose $4K is that ok with you? If it is a hobby for you, it should be. Let's just say life is too short not to enjoy it.

At some point your going to have to take a chance unless your willing to jump in the car and drive to see it. I have found lots of cars that I would have loved to have, and seemed to be priced right, but on the wrong coast, or wrong timing. They wind up selling in a reasonable time.

Too many people give advice on car price, but have not bought a car since the 90s. They pick cars apart because it is easy to do against the concourse standard they seem to be judged against regardless of why YOU are buying it. OR they are in the business/hobby full time and they will get leads and cars falling into their hands. Something you won't have happen. So their view on the price is based on getting cars under ideal conditions for the buyer.

Sure, do not pay $69K for a car that is selling in the 35-45K range all day, but when a car comes up around the target price; you need to be ready to react. Especially if the car has the qualities you defined earlier. Because most cars you see won't have those qualities, or if they do, they are closer to the concourse car and out of your price range. I actively was looking and purchased 2 cars in the last 3 years. My first car took 3 years to find and so did the second. Good Luck with the search. I do not think this Charger was over priced and certainly it did sell pretty fast.

Thanks for your input. I'm willing to travel if need be, although close to home is a huge bonus.

I've defined what I'm looking for (68-70 Charger, 68-69 RR, 68-69 SB) Automatic w/Center Console, Black Interior, Power Steering, ideally Non-Ac, No Power Windows. 383-4BBL or 440-4BBL. #'s matching would be nice but if not at least a date era correct engine. Not looking for an engine from the 70's if I can avoid it.

Charger - Ideal color is Red with Black stripes, with Black top.
RR/SB - Ideal color is Red, Orange, Blue, Turq with Black stripes
No light Green metallic/Green interior, hate that color.

40K is my high end but might go to 45K if need be.

Looking for a cruiser (no trailer queen) to drive on nice days to work as well as on weekends. Go to a few local car shows that sort of thing.

Not worried about car going down in value as the real value is having it as well as my youngest son is into cars so so can't put a price tag on father/son time to enjoy a hobby not a lifestyle.

My buying thought process is to find a car, get in touch with the owner, get a pre-purchased inspection and if all goes well, see the car in person and make an offer.

Your selection is wider than mine was looking for a 70 only RR with 4spd and air grabber. Recently a 69RR came up for sale in my area and I started looking those sale prices. Seems like several nice cars very original less motor where all under 25K. The chargers do seem to be on the rise.

This what your looking for?

, ideally Non-Ac
Don't forgo a factory ac car if you can find one! I'm north of you and I wish a/c was the first thing I added last summer. I waited until this winter to add it after suffering last summer without it. I drive mine to work a day a week and it was brutal in July and August. It's amazing how much heat these car throw off!!
