Just wondering if anyone went to look at this. Was in CL 2 weeks ago but now ad is gone. I'm VERY interested in this and am in communication with the owner. Take a look at what you see and give me your opinions. Below is the email trail. Oldest email is at the bottom and top one is from today. Asking $42K

OWNER: yes the block is a 440HP just a different year but it is stamped

ME: Can you send me all of the photos you took as the CL ad is gone. Need more pics of engine block to see the id# to confirm it's a 440 HP. So everything is #'s matching EXCEPT the engine, correct?

OWNER: Found out motor is not it is a 440 hp but not for that serial number, transmission and rear end are correct plus everything else. Car was supposed to be green. Besides motor and color everything is original 1968 parts. I might be able to get a broadcast sheet copy from dodge I just need to do a little leg work on that. I have 2 offers of 42k they just haven't come back I have another for 40k but my mom is wanting me to take to auto fair next week and push for more. I'm trying not to I'm really busy with work.

ME: What kind of comments / remarks have the buyers made. Are they able to tell you if its a #'s matching car?

OWNER: Havent yet, lot of serious talkers. I'm probably heading to the auto fair in Charlotte with it unless someone hands me 42k cash before I go. I have the title now it is signed and notorized

ME: Morning just wanted to see if you sold the car this weekend.

OWNER: I'll let you know I have 5 people coming by this weekend to look possibly buy

ME: Thank you for the additional information. Would you be interested in selling for $40-45, if an inspection I ordered came back with no issues?

OWNER: As far as I know yes, I know the year he did the auto Rama in Cleveland Ohio the judges were all over the car and he took first place and best of show

OWNER: It's a true R/T ill get the pic and send it to you

ME:Nice looking charger. Is this a #'s matching car. Do you have pics of the fender tag and or build sheet. Is this a true R/T or clone?

Looks like a #3 condition, color changed NOM example to me.

Maybe low 40's is the market for a car like this, but I don't watch chargers closely. I know chargers are hot and bring premium money.

Seems fishy. "Mom wants me to take it the auto fair?" "Get a broadcast sheet from Dodge"?

Why is the seller so uneducated? Is he a car flipper? He has a title now? Who had it before? He's got guys lined up for days with offers = no serious buyer.

These are fishing expeditions. You have to chase this stuff, sometimes you win and other times you walk. You also have to be agressive. If he's floundering at $40-42k I think mid $30's would buy it if you were there in person and were ready to take him to the bank. Car looks pretty good underneath. Paint quality is impossible to tell with red and pictures.

There are a lot of 'walk away' signs here for me but I haven't talked to the seller. Did you talk to him or just email?

seller is full of **** and has no real offers or it would of been sold already!
many incorrect details
that air cleaner would be the first thing i would toss in the trash
owner must like orange a lot as the motor is the same wrong color
is that mud slapped on the frame rail???
i wouldn't touch this one unless my eyes saw it in person first..
the only thing it has going for it is
that it is a 2nd gen charger.
the word perfume pig describes this mess..

My opinion and mine alone, so take it for what its worth. I don't do this highest offer ****. Tell me what you want for the car period. Its like a auction were there is no auction and this my mommy said this or that is another turn off. Unless your ready to travel to see this car in person your back is against the wall. Guy is telling you he has all these alleged offers, maybe he is telling the truth maybe not. So what are you suppose to do fly there on a lark and find out he sold it to the highest offer?
There is no car on the face of this earth that id play this game. Me? id tell him im a serious buyer and if all your questions are satisfied then id inspect it in person and make a offer and have a deposit ready. Otherwise walk away

Some years back i went with a neighbor to look at a MGA. It was a estate sale of the contents of a house and the car was in the garage up for offers. At first it looked like the rare barn find but upon closer inspection it was not. The owner just parked it, got sick and passed on not that much earlier. The car was complete but re-painted and a very poor job. It wouldnt start and the chrome was all pitted. It could have been a nice car at the right price
The owners representative upon being asked the price started this highest offer thing and i told my neighbor offer low as it just needed to much work. So he offers around 3 grand. Later we found out some idiot bought it for 12 grand. A much better example could have been had for not much more and all we could think was this buyer got caught up in the moment of finding a car in a dusty dark old garage and made a offer that was ridiculously high to all but eliminate other offers

In general, I like the car. I do NOT like the trash can lid sized tach blocking the view of the guages!
I am not an OEM correct type of guy but I'm also not a full throttle race guy either. The deviations from stock here are not terrible or permanent. It looks like a reasonably clean, fun car. Mostly stock appearing. You ever notice how critical people are when you show one for sale, yet when someone BUYS IT and posts it online most people are complimentary??? What gives people the balls to be as critical as an Olympic gymnastics judge on cars for sale but then a total sweetheart after a guy buys it?
So it has some aftermarket parts. So the air cleaner is for a later 440. Assuming it is not a"bondo over rust" turd, could YOU duplicate the car for the money? Take a $10,000 bare UNrusted shell and add up the costs from there. Engine, trans, axle, suspension and brakes. Body and paint. Glass and trim. Wheels and tires. Interior.....You know it adds up quick, in many cases, people quit counting because they do not want to know the actual total.

Nice enough car, but I would not buy it until I personally went and saw it in daylight, and on a lift. For $40 K you should be free to inspect it till the cows come home before handing that many clams over to the seller. It would also depend on what I wanted the car for. A driver, a show car 100% correct, a local show and shine car or what. Don't get caught up in the hype of a 68 Charger R/T and be blinded by the coolness of it. I would look at it hard, and unflinchingly before buying it.

The problem with pricing these is while it's easy to find what they are listing for, it's harder to find what they are actually selling for. A car like this may list in the mid- to high-$40k, but I'm seeing a lot of them that have been listed for months and aren't selling. I suspect a lot of his offers are from dreamers who come out an make offers they know they can't pay, and when the owner says yes they suddenly suffer some terrible unforeseen circumstance that forces them not to buy. It's also likely he's hearing from a lot of flippers who are low-balling him because they want to make their money.

He's either going to go to the show and find a sucker, or get sick of the car and sell it for less when he gets back. What's likely to happen is if he doesn't find a seller at the show, he'll come back and call his best offer folks, who will now all have a sick family member or a death to deal with and can't buy, then you can hit him with a $35K offer and he'll take it.

Kern Dog - Thanks for your input & I agree that people bitch about a car when you look for opinions but when you say hey look what I just bought it's all thumbs up. I also agree that the tach needs to go along with the air cleaner. Not all that expensive to replace & 99% of the time your driving with the hood down anyhow so big deal.

I'm just looking for something nice to drive around on a nice day and perhaps a local car show.

I will be at Charlotte for the Auto Fair starting Thursday morning through Saturday evening. Do you know if the car will be in the car corral or in the show on Saturday or Sunday? If he should give you a space number, I can possibly look the car over.

worth every penny, cost way more to do whats been done to that car even if its not perfect, go look at it in person, and bring a magnet. real rt rust buckets have been bringing 15 to 20 on ebay that need everything, for the last year or two. jmo good luck, looks good in the pics!

--------Rebel,dont get me wrong, i want you to get the car your looking for. This car you posted could be it. I just dont like the way this guy is selling it and i would hate to see you get jerked around. I agree with you and Kern about people giving there negative opinions. Not everyone has the big dollars to spend on a top notch restored car. Buying within a budget is always going to have some issues with a car. Were all pulling for you and hope you find what your looking for. Keep at it and you will find what you want

The problem exists where a buyer has questions about the car but the seller never answers, I wonder if the seller is either too busy or figures "why bother" because other buyers are interested without asking questions. The car may be completely fine with no bad surprises but if the seller never responds, you are taking a chance with a serious amount of money.
