Looking at a 68 charger a guy has for sale and is missing the fender tag but claims there is a build sheet. I say claims because the build sheet is hard to read; only have a pict of it right now. Are the last six of the vin on the build sheet? Will any of the vin be on the body? Is build sheet just as good as fender tag? Thanks ahead of time for any info
Post a pic if you can. The BS is better to have as it's more detailed with the options the car came with.
i believe they call it the order number.......it appears on both the fender tag and the build sheet, also on driver side trunk gutter under the weather strip
68 did not have the VIN on the body, still has the order number. Order number and VIN are on the BS. Order number is on the fender tag too. No VIN on 68 fender tag.
I don’t recall hearing that it was a mid-year thing but I don’t know. My only reference was a 4/68 GTX.
The stamping on the body shows the plant, the year, the model type (indicated first letter of the VIN) and the last six digits of the Sales Order number. So B8X = Hamtramck plant, 1968 model year and Charger. 194971 are the last six digits of the Sales Order number.
Research indicates it tends to vary by plant as some plants don't show any VIN until after 1/1. Vins in the 103 range are known from the StL plant so they started in August. Some say only the HP cars received VIN stamps. Research continues.....
Not all BS are accurate. Bought my 66 Satellite new and the BS tells one engine while it has another ( I got the poly but the sheet calls for a regular 318)
