History:
I was selling another car when a guy asked to trade me his customized 55 Chevy for my car. I told him I was not interested in his Chevy but if he had any mopar I would listen to a trade. He said he knew someone that had a 70 GTX that had been sitting for a long time. After a few weeks he came back to me and was the intermediary to the PO as the PO was a bit of a hermit (and to find out a hoarder). After several visits and 18 months of haggling, negotiating, convincing, I was able to strike a deal for the GTX as the PO needed the money due to some health reasons. So I purchased it in early 2008.
First two owners use to drag race the GTX at Riverside Race Track in Riverside, CA. The PO owned a mid to late 60‘s big block car from each of the major American car manufacturers (Chevy, Ford & 1970 Plymouth GTX). He only had a 1 car garage, and fortunately for me, he kept the GTX stored in the garage since 1985. The car was originally painted Lime Light Green, but he always wanted an orange car, so in ~1985 he painted the car the current color you see it directly over the Lime Light paint. Once the car was painted, he assembled the car, drove it for a few weeks, then parked the GTX as his wife filed for divorce. This life changing event was so dramatic, he never drove the GTX or any of his other vehicles again. The day I pulled it out of the garage was the first time it had seen sun since 1985. He called over his ex-wife and they reminisced about the car and the honeymoon they took in it. Oddly enough, his ex-wife married his friend and they are all pretty cordial, despite this causing him to lose it back in the 80‘s. He still owns the other big block cars, but they have been sitting in the CA desert sun for 3 decades.
To get the GTX in the condition it is today, the engine was rebuilt, including allowing for unleaded gas (at the time I was in San Diego, CA and I would have had to ship in lead additives as they are not sold in CA). The exhaust, headers, radiator, trunk pan and original carpet / front & rear seat covers were all replaced. The brakes were rebuilt and engine compartment painted. I did remove the front brake lock mechanism for safety reason and the Jimmy Hendrix 8 track I found in the 8 track player. Overall it is still in pretty original condition and I wanted to preserve the GTX as this felt like one of those types of cars that you only come across rarely that has so much originality to it that doing a restoration does not feel right. I also have many of the original documents over its history as the PO kept everything associated with the car.
That's it for now...
