70RR - Steering gearbox pouring fluid.

Hey Guys, new here. I have a 1970RR built by an amateur car guy, was a satellite at one time fromn what I understand. The issue is, the car has a few hundred miles on it since it was complete, and the gearbox is pouring fluid. I am concerned that there is an issue with gearbox alignment

or that something is torquing that gearbox to much and causing that output shaft to bounce around. I have no idea where to start looking. any advice?

Sounds like a bad seal, was the steering gear rebuilt during the restoration or just given a DuPont overhaul?

...rattle-can restoration.

If you cannot see exactly where the leak is coming from.....spray some degreaser around the entire steering gearbox and hose it down.

Once dry you'll be able to pinpoint the leak for us.

Sounds like the seal at best or bearing at worst is gone in the output shaft. Typical issue with those boxes.

Looking at your picture, it appears the Pittman shaft seal is toast. If you don't feel like tackling the seal replacement yourself, get another box. But from Steer and Gear, Firm Feel or Redhead. Heard Lares is another possibility. Don't waste your time and money on any other source for a reman stocker. Unless you love punishment and have funds to burn. You could also go with an actual new unit from BAC[ Borgeson box], one of our sponsors on the site and THE place to go for that route, or new from Lares. I have a new one from Lares on my 67 wagon. Direct bolt in and fits with stock exhaust. However if you have headers, you're on your own for fitting. I have Hedman's on my wagon, 440, and needed to thump #3 & #5 tubes some.
