72 car built 8/31 with a January 73 motor???

Good afternoon all, have a 72 440 car with a 3698830 block dated 1 16 73, upper pad has 1 24 and an E2 on the exposed part of the pad. The Number stamped into the lower rail is what looks like S 0215348. Is there any chance this is a late release. The build date is 8 31 on the broadcast sheet? I’m guessing it’s likely not the original motor but the S in the serial number on the block has me wondering. Also, read several posts that discuss how blocks were selected from the storage yards???

Not necessarily.
A warranty block with a blank VIN pad could have been stamped by anyone that wanted to fool a future buyer.....if they didn't know about the casting date that tells the real story.

Yes, someone who has equipped themselves with correct stamps, and knows enough to re-stamp a block correctly ....

....might not not understand or look over something as simple as casting dates.

So, basically there is a chance it could be a factory replacement but more likely just a different motor???

It could be both. After so many years, it can be hard to determine.

Scrape the paint of that VIN Number above the oil pan , then clean it up

Factory warranty replacement engines typically were blank where the VIN would be stamped.
If the VIN stamp on the block does not match your car's VIN, then the motor is certainly from another car.

Yes, assuming that but the s in the serial number is what I’m questioning and if it is from another car is there any factory documentation out there that would list what engines went where and to what?

Hahaha, just got the car and haven’t gotten it up on a lift yet. I know, I know, I’m trying to get as much info on the car as I can and trying to find out the story to it. I would like to chase down the original
Block if it still exists or at least know if it was blown and discarded. I am that guy for now until I get my answers. After that I won’t care. Lol

I’m sorry... I didn’t mean you per say. It’s rampant through the Mopar cult. All this BS about “matching numbers” started out as a Corvette thing. The VIN on a Corvette, or any GM car produced through 1971 did not have the engine designation. The only way to tell if your car had the high performance version of an engine was if the sequence number on the block matched the VIN. Anyone can walk up to a similar year Mopar... and see what engine it came with.

No sweat, I’m just trying to make them match and it’s not working - Lol. I just want the story so I can move forward. Swapping the tires and rims next week so I will check it out when it gets on the lift.

Looks like S021584S the last S I’m unsure until I can get under there and clean it up.
