as i keep looking for my 62 bout the time i get a pile i run across something that mite be worth having. old guy up here has a bunch of mopars in barns and out buildings. most are virgin tin. very few folks have been up there. super happy i was let up there. .... what im looking at and the only car for sale is a 72 RR /GTX. it has a 440 6 bbl 4 speed high price range but has no A/C or power windows. .. so heres my question. .. the vin shows a Z in the engine spot. sadly he said no pics aloud. i have never seen a Z code nor a 6bbl in a 72. build date is 11/71... so what am i looking at here?? one off or a knock off??? .. thanks.

I would buy it first and worry about that Z after getting the GTX home. A complete car I assume?

edited to add V-8:
Z in 5th VIN digit is Special Order V8 as per:

The banks close in 30 minutes:poke::poke::poke:

running driving car....16.500 is what he is asking for it. but was a 6bbl a thing in 72??
Yes, as per post #4.

I had heard they existed for '72, but have never seen one.

I've also heard that a few '72 cars came with the 426 Hemi.

Banks are open for 16 more minutes.

I heard that there were two or three documented 72 440 sixpacks......
If you get this one, be prepared for VERY CAREFUL scrutiny, to find if its real, or a forgery.
One-of-less-than-five cars get looked at a lot.... and i think that price is about 1/4 of what it is worth........IF its real.

I read or heard something along those lines too...

the price isn't bad, even if it's not a real 6bbl car

Hey hacksaw i am in PA and have a 72 RR GTX. I would be happy to go look it over with you if you would like another set of eyes...

Early data books, order sheets and sales materials all show the 6bbl WAS going to be offered for 72. Early, like first week of production early, the engine was dropped due to not passing emissions standards. There are a handful (5?) of known 72 440-6bbl cars. They were supposed to be built and they were built.

BUT...if anyone claims they have an original 72 6bbl car built after the first week of production be prepared for serious scrutiny and likely a disappointment. Be prepared to offer a broadcast sheet, window sticker or rock solid documentation on the car.

No pics allowed = really suspicious. "Z" would not be necessary as "V" as already assigned to the 6bbl in 72.
Data books shows the four speed was to be N/A with 6bbl. 4bbl only.

I would likely assume it is a clone/fraud, and then decide if what is there is worth what he is asking....as a car, not a 72 sixpack.

ya .. eyes open on it for sure ... im not realy thinking its 1 of 5 ... im not that lucky. the Z kinda makes me wonder sense i have never seen it before and thats why i asked ....but im thinking it is still worth what he is asking for it. and he not letting me take a pic don't serprise me ... guy is just that way. im going back up tomarow with my bible and dig a bit more. .. still think im going to get it. can't be that many 72 4 speed birds around. as far as having others look at it i have no problem with that. .. if its real it will have to be proven. i know enuff to read a fender tag and so forth and not get bent over but 1 off stuff is a bit out of my comfort zone. like i said ... il post some pics and so forth when i get her home....

Read SOMEWHERE about several 72s built in aug 71, preproduction cars, with majority of 71 equipment. November build makes a guy raise eyebrow for sure. NICE FIND!! GOOD LUCK, SWEET IF TRUE Z code car!!

Found this over at the roadrunner nest:

No such package, there was never a package or option officially titled “GTX” for model years 72-74’. Simply, if you ordered a Road Runner with one of the optional 440 engines, the car was called a “Road Runner GTX” ,using the RM vin prefix, came with dual badging and a higher trim level similar to the 71’ “Satellite GTX”.

You can’t buy a lot for $16,500 anymore. Running, driving 72 Runner/GTX. No brainer here.

Congrats and good luck.
