I'm dropping the small block pushbutton 727 from my '64 Dart. I've been trying to remove the shift cable at the tranny without success! Carl Munroe's book says to "...push the cable adapter lock spring out of the case with a screw driver inserted through the neutral safety switch hole..."

Well, I'm doing this with the car on jack stands, and I can't see anything inside the neutral switch hole, let alone any lock spring. Further, none of the pics of this valve body in the book show such a 'lock spring.' And with the wheel adjuster loose the cable base won't budge.

Has anyone done this before, and does anyone have a pic actually showing this 'lock spring'? Thanks!

This is the first cable shift 727 I've ever worked on, so the pics tell no clear story for me! In the pic below I see what looks like a, well.....something made from maybe a heavy paper clip? Then it says push clip (the paper clip?) toward center. Center of what? What is it pushing against or fitting into? Not clear from the pics since it's not actually being done.

The pics that followed made no sense to me. A socket that the cable gets pushed into maybe? Heck, I haven't even been able to get the cable end out of the case yet. Seems stuck!

I posted these photos to show you the exact INTERNAL parts you are having to 'unlatch'. I assumed it was clear that from the manual and the online hyperlink, what the big picture is. The 'paperclip' is a tool I made out of coat hanger to push on the release clip. I suggest unthreading the 2" diameter shift cable adjuster, to get a straight shot at pushing on the release clip from front of trans. The service manual SUCKs at actually showing what you need to aim at. I attempted to show what you need to aim at.

Okay, got it! Had to hunt for it for a while, but it's out. Now, there is another cable going to the back of the tranny that I think is the park lever cable. How does that one come out?

My 3rd photo is the rear cable. unscrew the allen screw and push up (with in fact the same allen wrench) on the spring tab and pull the cable.

Okay, got everything. Thanks guys! The responses WERE helpful!
