727 swapped for what

63 polara with a 440/727. I had the trans rebuilt by Mr Art Carr. The trans I had used the early joint. I wanted to use a normal joint. He got me a later case which uses push buttons ad a normal u joint. Here’s the question. If I want to purchase a new torque converter how can I tell the spline count? He charged me 4k for everything including r&r. The crank is a cast 76 Motorhome unit so I believe that’s a known I’d. I can’t call him as he finally passed. Are there different spline count shaft that fit in a 64 I believe case. I want to give the converter guy I decide on good answers.

It sounds like he built you a 65 trans possibly. But there's no way anyone can tell you which input spline is in there. Have to remove + count.
 
If it is a factory pushbutton case with 2 cables then the trans output shaft and tailhousing are 65. If it still has still push button shifts the valve body is a 64 (or a 64 manual valve and rooster comb in a 62-65 valve body). The original input shaft spline count for all 62-66 727's is 19. However the later 24 spline input shaft is an easy swap. It could have either one. If the cast crank converter is factory it has a 24 spline shaft. Unless a lot of money was spent on the cast crank motor, it will be externally balanced. Remove the stone shield and look at the converter. The factory welds will be spot welded holding the cast crank converter weights. If the were added they will be tigged or migged. If they are spot welded for sure it's 24 spline.

Agree with DVW. I know when I built the 727 for my 64 Dodge, I swapped to a 65 tailhousing and I also swapped in a later input shaft so facilitate troublefree later convertor swaps. The parts are easy to find and it doesn't make sense not to do it. You'll just have to count them to make sure. The factory did not make a cast crank convertor to fit the 19 spline input shaft.
 
Thanks guys yes it’s still a push button shift, and it’s running a cut flex plate and the 11 inch converter has no weight. The front damper is the late external. As far as the crank balance goes it’s running the Speed Pro L2355L-030 pistons and looks like a lot of grinding. All the bearings looked good and checked in spec. Don’t know the bolt mfg but it looks aftermarket but without dimples to check stretch

So if it's got a scalloped flex plate the converter isn't a factory counterweighted converter. In that case ther is no way of knowing how many splines. It could be oringinal 19 spline, or swapped to modern stuff. If it were me I'd get 67 up spline coveter as the pickings of 18 spline are slim. when you pull it aprt you'll know. if It's an 18 spline it's an easy swap to 24 spline. You'll need a 67-70 input shaft and matching 67-70 reaction shaft support. You can use 71-77 as well but that requires a maching front drum as well. I've been building and racing push button 727's since the 90"s
