727 Trans HELP

I had assembled the engine, trans and drive shaft and had run the engine a couple times 2 or 3 minutes at the most. While doing that the trans was dry. Was that a bad thing? second I got all cables hooked to the trans and filled with fluid about 5 quarts started it and put it in nutral to finish the other 3.5 quarts and before I put any of the 3 in fluid appeared to come out of the dip stick tube. Is that bad? now there is no response from the trans. When I turned off the engine there was a humming noise for about 3 seconds, a sound I have never heard before and sounded like it came form the trans. This was a fresh rebuilt trans. Hope I didn't screw it up to bad.
 
hard to say for sure.not a good thing to run the trans while dry,hard on the torque conv.as far as the fluid comming out the tube,is the vent clear?

Crap. just never thought of that,,,,,,,,,I know nothing about a trans so not even sure what the vent is. This was rebuilt by a very good trans shop prior to install.....
 
should be a vent hole on main body of trans on top.normally fluid comming out the tube means vent is plugged and fluid is looking for air to escape.bubbles dont travel through trans fluid very easy.

The front pump turns by the torque converter body turning, so you were possibly turning the front pump dry, not good at all, hope you didnt ruin it.

Should be ok I think. I ran mine dry for a few mins to test my rebuilt engine. It had like 2 litres in it though. But still didn't ruin anything.
 
I didnt' think about that a all. I am pretty sure, based on the noise I heard when I turned it off that something bad happened. I'm guessing, (cuz I can't do that repair) It will be $1000 down the drain. Just my luck though, I am used to it.
 
Take it apart yourself. They aren't all that difficult. A gasket and seal set for one cost me like 70 bucks. If the trans was assembled with vaseline or tranny assembly lube it would be ok for a short run time.
 
Yes, I agree will all other posts, very hard on the pump and stall converter.

Also, I always over fill my tranny with fluid that way she never runs dry and stops marking her territory with small leakage spots.
 
Stopped by the shop today and the guy working on it said it is not the pump so I guess that's good news. He was hoping to have an answer today but no call. The fluid was flowing to the cooler but car won't go. When they rebuilt it I had a shift kit put in which he asked me about. He had the thing that looks like a maze on the table that he was ready to look at. Might get out of this cheaper than I thought if it was their mistake when they rebuilt it. They do good work so I am not worried about that.
 
Yeah, it was a bad thing. You never run a transmission dry. At least fill the converter and put 4 quarts in the pan.
 
While it is apart have them make sure the converter and transmission input shaft splines are a match, the early 727 uses a different spline and it may be spinning in the trans turbine if it is later.

When I had it rebuilt they changed it to the new style so A converter change in the future would be easier. They did get the car to move in reverse for a short distance and then it would'nt move after that. Still working on it.
