Based on the part number in the picture (2781937) , I believe I need the 7290 U-Joints. Are they the same (front and back) on a stock 70 Charger, 383 HP, Auto, and 8 3/4 suregrip? The yokes measure the same, so guessing they are the same but looking to see what's normal.

Do people rebuild them or buy new / NOS ones?

Thanks
Ross

Front and rear U-joints are the same, unless someone modified the drive shaft.

You can clean and grease u-joint still in good shape, but I've never heard about people rebuilding them. They are not that expensive an item, so rebuilding them may not be profitable.

Everything is still "good/not damaged" but the caps came off during disassembly, and needle bearings went every where. If the needle bearings are available, I could clean and reassemble.

take one cap off another axis of the u-joint, and count the needles. See if you can find them all. If the needle bearing "fell out" it may be they needed more grease, anyway. The grease seems to hold those things in there.

I have cleaned and regreased the u-joint caps and posts in the past, just to be thorough. If you're buying them new, I seem to recall avoiding those with the grease zerk, as they are rumored to be weaker than those without.

Number 2781937 on the pictured universal joint is the cross body forging number. The actual part number is 2852175.

For the 1970 Charger listed, 7290 universal joints front and rear is as originally equipped.

Although Chrysler originally provided individual components for service repairs, the aftermarket does not and the original Chrysler parts are discontinued. Following are the original component part numbers as reference:
- 7290 Roller and bushing (cup): 2781844 (includes needle bearings)
- 7290 Roller and bushing Retainer: 2781923 or 604593
- 7290 Roller and bushing seal: 2781947
- Roller and bushing seal retainer: 1739912
- Cross: not serviced separately, use new universal joint package

Replacement of the entire universal joint is customary. The pictured cross appears to have the beginning of wear from the needle bearings dictating replacement. If the wear marks cannot be felt, and the needles located, reusing is possible with cleaning and repacking with grease.

Thanks for the detailed response and info!

They're brinneled.. and for the cost of them, I've never heard of someone reusing them.
And you will not break a 7290 with a 383. Grease ports or not.
