I have a 74 Roadrunner with a 400 big block. I have put in headman headers (long tube)and have purchased a mini starter. The starter fits but it is tight up against one of the pipes of the header. Do I need to pound in a dint on the header giving me space? The headers will get extremely hot and I'm wondering how it will effect my starter. With the engine in place, trans hooked up and everything, i'm finding it very difficult to remove the header on the drivers side, due to the steering box. Anyone have any ideas or experiance with this and what have you done?

Thanks

Ive got the same problem, but worse, my 74 is a 440, with a 4 speed. and the drivers header doesnt fit at all. Hits damn near everything, best bet is to cut and re work the tubes that are touching, the last thing you want to do is restrict the flow of a pipe.
Ive got the same header you do... I think, whats the Part# on yours?

Two thoughts to consider...

•There are two sizes of mini starter, about an inch difference in length. Hopefully you have the long version and can switch.

•IIRC, most headers are designed for the B-body configuration and your 74 actually has a C-body style front suspension/k-frame....close but different.

Exactly, and the torsion bars are closer together to boot, so the pipes literally his everything

A little update...... I scored a set of Hedmann long tubes, the coated ones from carlisle chrysler nats and they fit without mods, heres the funny part, i ran the PN stamped on them, HED - 78038 and there for an E-body..... Just some food for thought
Pics on my build thread

Most headers for the '71/4 E bodies and '71/4 B bodies are the same. 74RoadrunnerBlue may want to check and see if his are for an earlier ('66/'70) B body car.

If there's a starter heat soak problem, don't wrap the starter in heat shield because that will just retain the starter's own heat. Wrap the header if possible where it transmits into the starter.

My mini starter's very close to a pipe too, but the only heat-soak issue is that the first two cranks on a hot engine are real slow, then it fires right up.
