Starter hitting the headers

So I’m installing Doug’s headers on my 66 Coronet 383 4 speed and looks like the power master 9613 is going to hit the header tube. Has anyone had luck with other starters? I also tried a Dakota starter and having the same problem. I’d like to avoid denting the headers if I can!

Are you using a mini starter?

Yes, both the powermaster and the Dakota starters are mini.

I'm using the Doug's 452 headers on my 440 and there's no clearance issues at all with the Dakota starter. Installing the starter and header together is a different story.

Is the header set meant to fit the 383 as well as 440? Don't be shy about "denting" the tubes. It is only cosmetic damage and won't affect power output (unless you go crazy with a hammer). I have used MSD starters on Dougs and TTIs without problems.

I had run across people with header issues in the dark ages. Leaking, clanking and other problems.
At the time I thought most of the reason for header’s was (look at me). Some of them didn’t do any appreciate able performance enhancement.
For mainly street drivers, I found it so nice to replace a starter for example.
If I was racing mainly I would do a different exhaust system.
Since about 1974 I didn’t want to attract noticeable street action from the Gendarmes.
Not to say I was distracted at times.
