So I've done my research on oil and the additive for the cone style sure grip but I am still confused. I thought about something like Royal Purple Synthetic gear oil with a friction modifier but then I ran across this answer on another forum...

That FSB is vague and misleading.

What are "special additives"? STP, PowerPunch, Slick 50, Lucas additive, Marvel mystery oil...?

What is the "recommended lubricant" that can only be used? Sounds like it is NOT standard gear oil.

The following quote is taken directly from Auburn's website under cone type limited slip differential- Installation Manual:

-IMPORTANT LUBRICANT NOTE

The Auburn Gear limited-slip differential design has been extensively tested with high quality non-synthetic 80W90 hypoid oils treated with GM or Ford friction additives (3 oz. of additive will treat 1 quart of oil). To avoid differential clutch chatter (noise) and for optimum
performance, use the oil and additive described above. Use of other additive and oil types may cause differential clutch chatter.**

GM Part Number: 1052358

This was a post from Doctor Diff. So the question is this. WHAT DO YOU USE?

Use quality dino oil with the additive! Not synthetic!!!

I've always used the same stuff that the Dif Dr has listed. Synthetic stuff will work in dragcars with spools, but will eventually leak.

If you have friction plates then you need the friction modifier failure to use will result in worn out discs and constant chattering turning corners you will need to rebuild once damaged

Had hell with a 9 1/4 Track Lok and after a couple of oil changes and using the Mopar additive and it still chattering, I finally added in a 1/3rd bottle of STP to the regular gear oil. Yup....it's been nice and quiet for the last 55K miles and still grabs fine. The Durango has 100k miles on it now. Never had any problems using normal hypoid gear oil and the Mopar additive in the 8 3/4 units but never tired using STP in them. I'm betting it would work fine.
