Deceased, But not forgotton
I'm putting the axles back in the 8-3/4 and have forgotten the clearance between the axles as adjusted by the spanner nut. anyone know that clearance? .010? ..013?
thanks, thats kinda how I remembered it, been a long time since I've done the adjustment, the green bearings that eliminate having to adjust are nice-but expensive. they were $18.00 when first introduced.Pretty sure it’s.008-.013”.Tap left axle first to make sure it’s seated all the way before adjusting the nut.
And tighten down adjuster to zero side play and back off until in spec.
Man, that was a long time ago when 18 bucks would get you a tank of gas lolthanks, thats kinda how I remembered it, been a long time since I've done the adjustment, the green bearings that eliminate having to adjust are nice-but expensive. they were $18.00 when first introduced.
1970 pre gas shortage I bought premium 110 octane at a montgomery ward station for 33 cents a gallon , you could not put 10 dollars worth in a car then, @ 30 cents a gallon would have been 30 gallons,my charger held 18... then the BS gas shortage startedMan, that was a long time ago when 18 bucks would get you a tank of gas lol
Now ur showing your age! And to 'cranky',the 'greens' had to be in the late 80's-early 90's?1970 pre gas shortage I bought premium 110 octane at a montgomery ward station for 33 cents a gallon , you could not put 10 dollars worth in a car then, @ 30 cents a gallon would have been 30 gallons,my charger held 18... then the BS gas shortage started
Yeah and didn't it used to be recommended that you run it on the tighter side with new axle bearings? Or was it go looser with new bearings...can't remember that part. I've always seemed to be OK shooting for about the middle of the range though, about .018'Bean' has it right, knew I should not have relied on memory. Measurement is kinda "feel" it move & cant hardly see it move..
late 60's as best I recall, but I did get a generous discount from the bearing house in Sacramento- I'd imagine even then list would have been over $30.00 still worth it,I thought at the time I should invest in all I could get because they are the answer. Was buying Mobil Supreme in early 71 for 36 cents. It was the best you could buy in my area. But when did the Green bearings make it on the scene? Was it that early? My first experience with them was in the early 80's.
