I'm putting the axles back in the 8-3/4 and have forgotten the clearance between the axles as adjusted by the spanner nut. anyone know that clearance? .010? ..013?

thanks, thats kinda how I remembered it, been a long time since I've done the adjustment, the green bearings that eliminate having to adjust are nice-but expensive. they were $18.00 when first introduced.
And tighten down adjuster to zero side play and back off until in spec.

1970 pre gas shortage I bought premium 110 octane at a montgomery ward station for 33 cents a gallon , you could not put 10 dollars worth in a car then, @ 30 cents a gallon would have been 30 gallons,my charger held 18... then the BS gas shortage started

Was buying Mobil Supreme in early 71 for 36 cents. It was the best you could buy in my area. But when did the Green bearings make it on the scene? Was it that early? My first experience with them was in the early 80's.

Yeah and didn't it used to be recommended that you run it on the tighter side with new axle bearings? Or was it go looser with new bearings...can't remember that part. I've always seemed to be OK shooting for about the middle of the range though, about .018

late 60's as best I recall, but I did get a generous discount from the bearing house in Sacramento- I'd imagine even then list would have been over $30.00 still worth it,I thought at the time I should invest in all I could get because they are the answer.

Still have a pair left on the shelf. The grease is probably half dried out by now lol. Didn't start building rear ends until around 85 and usually had plenty of parts including bearings and seals. Bought a race car in 84 turn key and the guy said the TR intake was ported (it wasn't) and the rear end had the Green bearings, spool etc and it did.

BTW on the Murphy side of all this I could not lift that punkin into the housing in 1000 years -easier to turn the car upside down or cut a hole in the floorboard about the rear end and drop it in.
My dad had a decent floor jack he left me, I made a ugly bracket to hold the punkin to install in the housing, it was scary and took about an hour to finally get it to align with the studs, I got it on far enough to start a couple of the nuts-yea-- but the left side was not flush when i looked on that side murphy had been there- the hose from body to housing was pinched between the punkin and the housing ,easy to fix you say? not in my world, not only was it pinched- it had looped around one of the studs, no way could I risk backing it off the studs so it had to be cut in two places to bet the hose removed, fun eh?
