I had a leak and needed to pull the center section out. How does this gear pattern look. It's only got about 50 miles on it. The backlash is right at .010. It seems noisy to me especially coasting in neutral. And the pinion seal is leaking. Should I make any adjustments while its out?
Don't mind the dog hair my Lab decided to help. Lol!

Thanks

That doesn't look quite right - you can try and move the pinion I guess.
Do a proper marking is probably best. Go from there.

Pattern looks a little high up on the heel but you really need to get some yellow gear paste to highlight the pattern. Probably not going to have much luck quieting down an already well run in gear set with adjustments.

After it has been run for just a short time, it is highly unlikely you will get them quited down. Only solution is to try a new ring and pinion....

Here are some pics of how it is currently. The preload was way off. I also moved the backlash from .012 to .007. Probably won't help the noise though.

You might notice a difference. Gear sets today are not factory lapped in so a lot will have a whine. It's hard to get an even pattern on both drive and coast. Seems like only one side will come in for you and you have to make it the drive side. Your pattern is even on both sides and that shows you have a good set. Give it a whirl and don't use synthetic lub. 500 miles is the normal break in period.

The paste did change the appearance of the pattern - looks better positioned on the drive side now. Looks pretty similar to the final pattern on my 8-3/4 gears I ran about a dozen patterns on a few years ago. I found there was a fairly narrow range over where both a decent drive pattern and a decent coast pattern could be achieved. Outside that narrow overlap one could be achieved but not the other. I still have some “float” whine at around 50 when running steady at light throttle. Not sure how much is my set up and how much is just the sorry state of Chinese gears these days.

That pattern looks OK and I would run it now and see how it is. At least you know it is set correctly and the pinion preload may have had an effect on the noise.
No gear set made for these older diffs will be quiet at all speeds. So long as it is quiet at highway speeds.
You may be lucky.
In any case run it for a while and see if it is acceptable.
Can you update I would be interested.

Went for a test drive. The neutral coast whine is gone. It does have a pretty good howl to it at about 50mph. But other than that they are a lot quieter. Fingers crossed the 50mph howl will settled down with wear. But I doubt it.

It could improve a bit but based on my experience but you are right it will stay noisy in our lifetime.
Yours sounds a lot like mine. From about 40 - 48 MPH it has a moderate whine. All other speeds and conditions quiet. I am quite happy to live with mine. I do try and stay out of or accelerate through the noisy zone as much as I can.
You will be able to decide in time, if you spend little time driving at the noisy speed perhaps just live with it.
The quality of the gears available these days is a problem I believe and your initial set up issue would not have helped.
Hope it is OK.
