I have a B-Body 9.25 rear end in my 72 SSP with a 3.23 gear. Does anyone know if a ring and pinion out of a late model ram (2003- up) will swap in to the earlier rear? There are plenty of Rams in the junkyard and I wouldn't mind switching to a 3.73 or 3.93 for $20 if I update to a a518 trans.

It should ,you may have an abs tone ring in there but it won’t hurt.. I’m not for sure on bearings, I’d check the bearing spec across the board . Call Dr Diff and double check imo.

I don't know why there is so little info on 9 1/4s . It's a stout rear-end, good lsd's available. Maybe cause they are just too wide to swap into 70 and earlier b-body mopars, or any a body.

That I agree with too.. other than the gear go out the back instead..maybe everyone’s reason for not using them.

It's bigger and stronger than the 8 7/8 twelve bolt that the Chevy guys love, and bigger and stronger than the 8.8 the Ford guys adore. Has the same c-clips as the 12 bolt and 8.8 (which is, After all, a copy of the twelve).
Simple answer, it's too wide to fit anything as is, and hot rod parts are custom or non existant.
And I guess if anyone in the Mopar world wants a removable cover, non pumpkin type rear, a dana 60 is the automatic go-to (mine too!).

Looking on ebay,
Auctions list 9.25" ring and pinions 73 to 2010 and others auctions list 73 to 2000
So a safe bet would be 2000 and older will fit..

The 9.25 is a pretty stout piece near as I can tell. The width is likely a problem. Narrowing/aftermarket axles probably needed. May be some late model cars that are close to the B body.
As an old school guy I switched from the 8 3/4 for my drag car to Dana 60. The Dana 60 is really tough, even though a bit heavy. The stock Power Lock and axles will hold up to at least 450-500 HP. Aftermarket axles and a spool in a Dana 60 is good to at least 700 HP, with excellent traction.

Just don't get some from a 68 and down!

I found a 9.25 out of a Magnum with a sure grip that swapped directly in for the 8.25 my car came with and it cost peanuts. Didn't even need to change the driveshaft so 71 up cars do have that option without narrowing one. It just came with a 3.23 gear so shorter gear would be a nice option with an od trans. It looks like the 94-01 Rams could be had with a 3.55 3.93 or 4.10. A 3.73 would be ideal but a 3.55 or 3.93 might work well... if they swap I could get both from the junkyard and put it them on the self if I want to change and still be out less than the shipping on a new ring and pinion.

The 9.25 axles never had a 3.23, they did have a 3.21.
Also a 3.55, 3.92 and 4.10.

Pretty sure I have the Dakota 9 1/4 width measurement on the axle sticky thread.

They DID come in 73-ish and up B body cars.

I've heard ther was a spline count change like the 8 1/4, but haven't verified or been told when.

I'm rebuilding one at the moment. 2003 Dakota with the 3:55 and "Trac Loc".

These are known for bad pinion bearings and the clutch packs can be problematic with broken clips and locking disks.

The preload on the carrier bearings are adjusted with a special tool that has to reach down through the length of the axle tube and fit the hex designed in the adjuster. The tool can be bought or you can make your own.

Axle bearings are open roller dependent on lubrication from the differential. The roller bearings run on the axle shaft itself without a race.

It's just how they are doing things. I like the 8-3/4 with limited slip or old Dana better. JMO

Definitely contact Cass aka Dr Diff for what's compatible. Several changes were made throughout the years. Good luck!
