950 3bbl holley

I ran an old 950cfm 3bbl on a Tranchula TM/Eddy single plane manifold
with a 1" spacer
on a 69 RR BlueByU
a real 11.60 streetcar, 446/TF, 3500 super holeshot, 29.5s w/4.30:1 way back in the 80's
I don't remember any real different tuning issues over
a reg 750, 850 (or 1,050cfm) dbl pumper to race
maybe a tad bit more jett in the back,
or drill out the plate on a vacuum carb
(now you can get a plate with changeable jetts)
a lil' smaller air bleed added more fuel
(PITA press in or drill out, not like today's removable screw-in type bleeds)
may have changed the emulsion bleeds/jetts on the metering block some too
I don't specifically remember what
it was nothing out of the normal realm of carb tuning
ran about 0.015 sec. faster, maybe 1.5 MPH too,
than my 'best ever pass' with
an annular discharge 850 dbl pumper, that flowed well over 990cfm
that was perfect for the set up
It was a Baylands/Fremont, good but similar air & weather or track conditions

a lot like tuning an Old spread-bore Holley carb
with small primaries & huge secondaries

New style Demon (now owned by Holley)
'Street Demon' Carb (625cfm or other cfms) is a 3bbl too
sort of modified spread bore, to clear dividers,
is allegedly a 'good cheap' street carb, according to 'Engine Masters'
for a 'mild combo' small cid or going with 2 x 4bbls on a single plane or dual plane

Demon 'Street Demon' 625cfm Spread Bore Polished Vac. Sec. Elect. Choke 4bbl #333-1902 #6.jpg

Vacuum secondary 950 3 bbl #4915 IIRC, 30cc pump
Holley 950cfm vs 3bbl #1 base.jpg

a different one #4604 (1,050cfm)
off hand I don't really remember what was different between to 2 vacuum carbs
other than 'flow rate' & a 50cc pump
the one above had a choke horn & manual choke
Holley 950cfm 1050cfm 3bbl #4604 Vac. Sec..jpg

dbl pumper below, it's not the one I used
this had a strange squirter nozzle
most of mine had a 50cc front pump too,
stepped up the squirter nozzles to like 37-ish IIRC, with down legs
hollow screw too
I think it had a plane jane #31 from Holley org.
like most of them do

1964 was the first year the Holley Model 3160 3-Barrel Carburetor was introduced for use in a NASCAR Race on July 4th on the Chrysler Dodge Plymouth Mopar Chryco 426 HEMI V-8, research suggest, as I have a saved image of a vintage period "Honest Charlies" advertisement that states specifically that and includes an overhead picture of the actual Holley List 3085 3-Barrel Carburetor Chrysler Part Number 2536406 but am unaware of how to include an image with this comment post or if that is even possible. Peace.

Rebuild kits can now be bought from Daytona Carburetor Parts, in Florida. They also make the secondary diaphragm, for the 3160’s. I have a few 3916, 950 cfm, and 4604, 1050 versions of this carb. They are a part of hot rodding history.
