I am going to be building a chrysler 331 extended bell hemi for a model A coupe.
I have chosen the 46rh trans because there is not many choices.

The 331 hemi I plan to put a blower on it and mainly street driving.

I have never rebuilt a automatic. What mods need to be done while I rebuild the 46rh tranny

You cannot bolt up a 46RH to an extended bell block without modifying the engine or trans. The bell on the block or trans needs to be removed. You would be better off finding a '55 up block to mate to the 46RH. The '54 is a "wet" timing cover so I would avoid that if possible. Also, if you have the heads from the '51-'53 block, they would not be a good choice for the blower setup you want. The valves and ports are very restrictive. Bob at Hemi Hot Heads has adapters if you want to use the early block. The Chevy manual trans adapter bolts on between the engine and manual trans, but the adapter for the 727/518 trans requires the bell removed from the transmission to work. Do some homework at Hemi Hot Heads, and a lot of reading on this. Good luck with the project...

They make the adapter for the extended bell. No concern about that from me.

Just looking for 46rh information. Been in contact with Bob for a few years.

I actually did 2. Not bad. Really. The front is the same as 727. The OD isnt bad but you need a press snd a tool for disassemble and assembly, theres a huge spring in there that could very will kill a man if it comes apart wrong.

Anything that is a must to change to beef it up so I am not blowing the trans apart?

I couldn’t say they were stock rebuilds. Not sure how much Hp the blown 331 will put out. But probably just your normal 727 mods should do.

46 RH forward half is an upgraded 727. For your use a stocker should be fine. There are plenty of diesel guys using them. So there are upgrades available. Try Suncoast or Exteme Diesel.

I have built a lot of 727's over the years, but have only worked on one A518. This one was for my son's project. I rebuilt the front part of the transmission as a normal 727, but took the OD chunk to my local Chrysler dealer and let the mechanic with proper tools and skill overhaul it.

Track down a diesel trans specialist in your area. The 46 shares many of the same components as the 47/48 units. Diesel gents can really abuse them so build specs and components for them are well known. Have a converter made up to your combo too. You would not be wise trying to use a reman stocker. Over on the BC side of Canada, you have BD Diesel. There should be someone closer to you.
