My gear shifter arm broke off on the threaded area tonight, anyone have experience replacing them, and is it a hard procedure? Thanks

The threaded shaft broke off? If so, yes, piece of cake to fix.

YYes I am not sure if it is for the one two gears or the three and four gears ill check tomorrow, I do not know much about trannies yet lol can I just take the side case off while it is in the air?

Getting the side cover off with the tranny in the car is possible but putting it back on might be a PITA. Seems to me I broke a shift fork back in the 80's and was able to change it without removing the tranny. What year tranny do you have? This relates to the style of shift fork detent. If you have the older style detent you will need to keep track of the spring, detent balls and tube all that lives in. When you push one shift lever through the side cover the ball will want to go flying so you may want to disassemble that in a big plastic bag. If you know what to look for it's no big deal and you can just catch the ball with your hand. The other type of detent uses levers and a pivot in the center and should be self explanatory.

It seems as though I have the lever style, However I have my dads old a833 out of his 73 laying around so I was going to just swap it. He has the spring and ball style, along with brass shift forks, so Im assuming his is an older dated tranny as I have steel shift forks. They are not interchangeable by chance are they?

You can use the steel shift forks if you cut the tip off the back. Holding both styles side by side you will see what needs to be done. Also, there is a long shoulder bolt that acts as an alignment pin. Make sure that goes back where it came from. Easy to figure out by looking for the deep counterbored hole in the case.
