Air Cleaner Set Up? Edelbrock 7193 Intake on 440 V8

Have 1966 Coronet 2 door sedan.
Building 440 V8. Holley Carb, probably 750-850 cfm.
I like the Edelbrock 7193 Performer RPM dual plane aluminum intake, but with 5.35 inch height, a stock air cleaner would require a hole in my hood. Don't want that.
What air cleaner, brand and part number, have you used to make this intake work in a B-body?
Is there a kit to move the air cleaner to top of wheel well and feed the carb with a tube? Thanks

I don’t know if you get this anymore, but certainly something similar if you look. If you’re creative you can make the base work with the factory air cleaner lid.

I used one of these, you can also get just the base. Lightweight 14in Air Cleaner Kit Black No Element 1/2in Spacer ALL25901

You may have to juggle filter drop bases, air cleaner lid styles and filter heights to get it to fit under the hood while taking into account any engine movement from rubber or poly motor mounts. But you also have to maintain enough clearance between the top of the carb vents and choke tower to the underside of the lid.

3/8" seems awful close and I always tried for 1" on my race car.

The above link shows a flat "lid" and flat "base". A "tent" style lid will work better than a flat top and a drop-base which curves up, then down into the carb, works better than a flat base. It affects the air flow into the carb and it's best to provide gradual curves for airflow instead of abrupt turns.

I have that combo on my 67. The PO used the MP drop base unit which uses a WIX 42044 element. On the hood insulation pad, I can see the imprint of the cast lid. Sometime in the future, I'll find something that doesn't use the flat, cast lid. Like in post 3.

When you are fitting together bases, lids and filters, assemble the three and flip it over to see how much clearance you have between the base and lid. Also, if you’re not using an HP style carb, the choke horn for the primaries might be tight to the lid.

Me too. I printed out the base specs from Allstar. Going to compare that to mine. Plus I'll need to see how much room I have from the KD/Spring stud on the carb to the existing base.

I did some measuring on my combo earlier. As long as I'm reading the Allstar info sheet correctly, the drop on the base is the same as what I have. But my current lid is cast and flat where their's is dropped. Also the Allstar unit takes a 14x3" element. I'm going to verify tomorrow, but if memory serves me correctly, I can get a shorter element. Combo that with their lid, which has a drop and I think I'll get some unit to hood clearance.

When you measure the drop, you should measure from the carb flange surface of the base to the base’s filter sealing surface.

Your current base’s drop is probably 1 1/4”.

Tomorrow I'm going to put a ruler across the carb flange and measure down to the KD items. See what a 1/2-3/4" gap gives me between flange and KD and compare that to the Allstar specs.

You already have the info you need between the actual correct measurement of your base and the Allstar specs you have. I’ll guess that they are within 1/8” of each other

FWIW, mine is a 16” dia. It allows much of the linkage to swing under the base.
