Got a 69 gtx 440.. The alt not charging I've been told I need to convert it to newer style that the old style isn't made any more.. Any one else done the conversion can help me out?

Not sure where you heard the originals are made, or a 'conversion' was needed. If the alt is actually the issue, look around for a new one. There are different voltage regulators, as well. But, again, readily available. The only normal conversions are ditching the horrible ammeter, going to 1 wire alt, etc....look on classic industries or year one sites. Or a bunch of others.....

I had every thing new on mine alt. and regulater and it stopped charging. It turned out the new regulater went bad so that might be some thing you want to check. Good Luck with it

Yes I think it may be the regulator but I've put 2 on there and changed Alternater still not charging

Take the alt in to a place to test it. If its good, swap another reg in. Before you do either, really examine the wiring. If you are certain the wires are good, not much else to the system. And the ammeter is good, and wires are good?

Make sure your ammeter is not burnt out.... If the ammeter is bad it won't charge. Bad ground @ VR, check & remove screws clean area....Check for 12v at alternator stud.....

You mentioned changing to the electronic voltage regulator ("VR") and the two phase alternator, have you done this already? If so, did you scrape the paint off the back of the VR so that its bare metal and same with the mounting holes on the fire wall? Need a good ground.

I recently changed to the electronic VR and a 60amp alternator and my issue was the battery wsa being overcharged. First VR was defective, but it works fine now with a different VR.

Oh, and if you need a single phase alternator, I've got the one I just pulled off my '69 Bee (yes it works) and I've got another NIB, just drop me a PM. But I have to say, I love the newer electronic VR, brighter dash lights at idle, head lights don't blink with turn signal on. :hello2:

Thanks for replies.. The amp gage is eliminated my dash wireing is another issue it self.. 2 wires that goto amp gage are tied togather.. Prolly the regulater again im guessing.. Thanks again
