I have a 67 Charger with 383 and my alternator died on me yesterday. Went to Napa this morning and they couldnt find anything in their system. Napa is my only option as they are the only show in town, would anyone know what they could cross reference or a part number perhaps I could give them?

Thanks

He asked me what year the car was, 1967 I replied, he stared at his computer for a bit then said we dont have a listing for that car and asked me if I could find a p/n.

Thanks for the reply moes.

That is the 72 and newer version. It will work fine. Keep the original. It can be rebuilt.

Maybe the NAPA guy doesn't know how to spell Charger.

Not much out there for "real" parts guys anymore.... I was told that Ford makes Chrysler, by one of the chain stores

So I replaced the alternator with the one moes suggested, as soon as I started it and gave a little throttle the voltage gauge moved to the right very fast, actually it works more like a tach as the more gas i give it the more the gauge moves, it will go all the way to the right and more!
Any ideas? With the previous alternator the volt gauge stayed right in the middle of the charge/no charge.

how are your grounds, especially the voltage regulator? Then I would verify how many volts are showing at idle and when you increase the RPMS using a multimeter. If it is over charging then I would take a look a the voltage regulator.

Thanks moes for the reply. Couple questions...

Okay so I check the grounds under the hood especially on the VR, does it have a dedicated ground or ground to the firewall?
Where do I check the volts at idle with my multimeter? How many should I see, I assume this will increase when RPMs go up?
Sorry for the questions, I learn as I go with this old rig!

first I would take the regulator off and take some sandpaper to the firewall connection area and the back of the regulator. That will eliminate the ground problem for sure.

use your DCV setting and 20 for the scale

with the car off check you battery volts should get around 12.6 volts for a good battery

start car and rev it up to say 2000 to excite the alternator and hold it there for a few seconds and see if it has around 14.5

DON'T run the car for to long if it says over 14.5 it's OVER charging.

I cleaned the firewall & back of the VR and nothing changed. Im getting 12.84 volts on the battery while the car is off and over 18 when it is running. I installed the alternator in the link from post #2 as suggested and according to the specs it does not have an internal VR from my understanding. So it seems my VR is bad?

Can you recommend one from Napa that would fit my needs. I was surprised they even sold them and even more so when I seen how many different ones there are.

Much appreciated for the help!

Napa VR32SB for the 35 amp alternator you bought.

tried to send you a PM but your inbox is full, clean it out please

My VR is quite a bit different than the one you suggested moes, here is what I currently have with the only number I could find on the old alternator.
Perhaps my old VR does not work with the new alternator Ive installed? Just want to be sure.
Thanks!

looks like some one has converted over to electronic voltage regulator conversion. Your new alternator will work with the 70 system

this is what your 67 should have from the factory

I would have told you that but I didnt know to tell you lol. Sorry bout that!

So I can order a VR to fit say a '74 Duster and should be good?

yep. Just make sure there is no paint on the back of the VR that bolts on to the firewall, so it will ground good

here is a diagram to check to make sure it is wired correctly

where are you located? I grew up in Sydney till I was 8 years old. Last time I was back was in 1987, I'm sure things have changed since then.
